Animals Including Humans

What I Should Already Know

  • Vertebrates have backbones.

  • There are 5 types: mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians

  • Some animals are suitable pets but others are not.

  • Some animals give birth to live young; others lay eggs.

What is a Life Cycle?

A life cycle is a series of changes animals including humans go through from birth to death.

Animals have offspring which grow into adults.

  • Animals give birth to offspring. These offspring then grow into adults who then have offspring of their own!

  • Mammals give birth to babies that are live. Fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians lay eggs (their babies are not live).

What do Animals Need to Survive?

Water

We lose water when we breathe and move about, so we must drink lots of it in the day.

If you don't drink enough water, you might struggle to sleep, feel hungrier than you should, put on weight, struggle to concentrate and be less fit and healthy.

Air

Air contains the oxygen that our muscles need to move.

Food

In order for a car to run it needs petrol. Petrol is fuel for the car. People are more complex than cars. The human body needs food for energy, to keep warm, and for growth and repair. We need many nutrients on a every single day to stay healthy.

The three main nutrient groups in food are carbohydrates, protein and fats. We also need minerals and vitamins. A good balanced diet of fresh food helps to keep us healthy.

Sleep

We need sleep to help us repair our bodies after being awake. It also helps us to remember what we have learned in the day and keeps us healthy.

If you don't drink enough water, you might struggle to sleep, feel hungrier than you should, put on weight, struggle to concentrate and be less fit and healthy.

What do Humans Need to be Healthy?

Healthy Food

It's important that the food we eat is healthy.

If we eat too much unhealthy food, we can become overweight, get poorly more often, struggle to sleep and concentrate in lessons. It also makes us feel groggy and have no energy.

Exercise (EVERY DAY!)

Exercise helps our heart, lungs, skeleton and muscles to stay healthy. We need all of these to keep our body going when we are young and when we get older.

Exercise is also important to help us sleep. If you don't get enough exercise, you can find it difficult to get enough sleep.

If you get poorly quite often, it could be because you don't get enough exercise. Try to do a little bit more (1 hour each day) to see if it helps!

Medicine (from a doctor)

Even if you eat healthily, exercise, get enough sleep and drink enough water, we sometimes still feel unwell. When we do, we can see a doctor, who will give us some medicine. This medicine can help us to feel better.

It is really important that we only get our medicine from the doctor, otherwise we could get even more poorly!

Good hygiene (being clean!)

If we don't stay clean, we can spread germs that can make us or others poorly. IT's really important we learn how to keep ourselves clean by:

  • Washing our hands before we eat, when they are dirty and when we have been to the toilet.

  • Cleaning our teeth twice a day.

  • Having a shower or bath regularly.

  • Washing our faces in the morning and before we go to bed.
