About the Exam

What to Expect Regarding the Exam

The purpose of the Mastery exam is to ensure that certified operators have the mastery skills in drinking water and wastewater systems.  The mastery exam is given online with supervision by a GateWay proctor at either the GateWay campus testing center or off-campus locations throughout Arizona.

The mastery exams are broken out into four areas: Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, Collection and Distribution. You will need to talk with your supervisor to determine which of the four areas to pursue.  Further, each area is then broken into four grade levels, with grade 1 being the entry level that must be taken first.

You will be given up to 110 questions online with three hours to complete.  Ten (10) of the questions are called PRE-TEST questions because ABC is testing them to see if they are good questions for future exams.  Although you will not know which the extra questions are, they will not be included in your score.  Only 100 questions are scored.  You will be emailed a copy of your exam score, which is called your Individual Mastery Report (IMR).
