PRIOR LEARNING
Pre-event information is shared with all students before the event via email and in a presentation shown in Advisory the week before
Planning for this project links to existing learning and conceptual understandings that all students will or have undertaken in curriculum this academic year, such as Design & Technology, Science and Humanities
VOCABULARY WALL (WHAT SOME OF THE FANCY WORDS MEAN)
Biomimicry - the design and production of materials, structures, and systems that are modelled on biological entities and processes
Biomorphism - models artistic design elements on naturally occurring patterns or shapes reminiscent of nature and living organisms
Bioutilization - refers to the use of biological material or living organisms in a design or technology. For example, using trees as a material (wood) for furniture or a living wall of plants to help clean the air in an office building is bioutilization
MODELLED & GUIDED PRACTICE
Students will find either on this site or on their portfolio, that for each task, there is a detailed explanation and usually an example of what is being asked for. Additionally, examples of student biomimicry projects are shared on this page.
INFORMATION SYSTEMS & RANGE OF MEDIA OPTIONS
Students are offered a number of accepted formats and media types through which they may create and/or present their work. Students may plan and work visually on their noticeboard, might work or plan discretely on their portfolio document and/or create digital or physical prototypes.
LANGUAGE MODELS & SENTENCE STARTERS
Students can find starter sentences in their pplanning and documentation portfolio (where appropriate). These have been added to suggest how you might start your writing and to help explain what is expected. Similarly, guidance for each slide is linked in the top right corner.
LANGUAGE & LEARNING SUPPORT
If and when students need additional support with language or understanding, they are able to reach out to one of the learning support 'experts' listed here and schedule a time during the project to meet for additional guidance.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment is varied and not based purely on outcome or ability. Instead, students are assessed against their approach to learning and contributions to the project. Students will also self and peer assess against the project success criteria which is outlined here and here.
CHECKING FOR UNDERSTANDING
Students will receive teacher check-ins through each of the four days and will be asked probing questions to check understanding and ensure that they are on schedule. Student will also receive ongoing feedback - see feedback guidance.
USEFUL & ACCESSIBLE TEXTS
The school library is an extremely useful resource where students can find the following biomimicry-related texts along with a plethora of other, very useful books related to design, science and sustainability. Many of these books have been purchased specifically due to their ease of accessibility for all learners. You may download a list of relevant books with the link below.
TEAM/GROUP WORK
Students are working in teams and are encouraged to collaborate, learn from and lean on their peers for support.
