Syrian hamster

Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) are a small rodent species that originated in the Middle East. They would naturally be found in arid, temperate regions of southeast Europe and Asia and live in deep tunnels that have cooler temperatures and higher humidity than the desert.

As a solitary species, Syrian hamsters would naturally live alone and are highly territorial. They are highly active and require large enclosures to exhibit natural behaviours, which include general locomotion, exploration, digging and burrowing, and foraging for food. Small plastic tunnels should be avoided as Syrian hamsters typically outgrow them and they have poor ventilation.
