Giant African Land Snails
Giant African land snails (Achatina fulica) are found in hot, humid climates and are considered a nocturnal species. They are herbivorous that consume a wide range of leafy greens, other vegetables and fruits. Calcium is particularly important for the formation and growth of their shell. There are several health issues to be aware of including dehydration, calcium deficiency, exposure to chemicals, skin problems and broken shells. Giant African land snails are hermaphrodites, which means that they have both male and female sex organs. In theory they can self fertilise but they typically will breed with another individual. They can produce a large number of eggs per year which means that they can quickly become a problematic species, they are considered an invasive species.
