Fancy mice
Mice (Mus musculus domestica) are a small rodent species that are mostly active at dawn and dusk. As a prey species they typically avoid large open spaces and prefer to be close to cover. Mice are a social species that should be kept with others. Females tend to be easier to keep in groups, whereas groups of males (bucks) can be more likely to have disputes. Mixed groups can be successful, however, the males should be neutered to prevent pregnancies.
Fancy mice can live up to 3 years old but typically live between 1.5-2.5 years and typically weigh between 25g-50g. Their weight should be monitored to ensure that they are maintaining a healthy weight and are not overweight or obese, or losing weight.
Plenty of enrichment should be provided to allow mice to exhibit natural behaviours. Enrichment may include suitable substrate with adequate depth to allow tunnelling, items to climb up/on such as wooden bridges, ropes, branches, hammocks and multiple nesting sites.
Handling requirements: Please be calm and quiet with this species, they are a small prey animal that are easily frightened. They move very quickly so confident, calm handling is important.
Latin name: Mus musculus domestica
Why do we have themes? This helps us to manage the social groups and identify our mice more easily, especially when you have large groups!
