Curriculum Overview
GHS will be offering English 9 through English 11, including Advanced 9, Advanced 10, and AP Language and Composition. Language Arts elective courses will include Creative Writing, Yearbook, and Journalism.
Instruction
All core courses will be guided by a unified set of aligned learning targets that address all Virginia SOLs as well as provide opportunities for advanced learning. All students will have individual digital access to our newly adopted English Language Arts textbooks.
Reading
Students will be provided with choice in their reading and time for reading practice in class as much as possible. Students are welcome to bring their own books, select books from the GHS library, or choose a book from the shelves in their language arts teacher's classroom. Teachers will focus on developing students as critical readers, encouraging connections between texts of all genres and topics.
Writing
Students will write often and for a variety of reasons, including to learn and explore, express and explain, and to achieve a particular purpose with a specific audience. Students will be encouraged to keep a physical notebook in addition to their portfolio of more formal writing in Canvas. Teachers will continually assess and discuss student writing strengths and areas for growth through regular feedback and conferencing.
