The Pokanoket/Wampanoag, Narragansett, and Nipmuc tribes united and defeated the European colonizers during Metacom’s War. Since their triumph the Sachems of each tribe formed a council where current and future Sachems can represent their tribes and discuss issues affecting their tribes with the council and create solutions together. The Pokanoket/Wampanoag, Narragansett, and Nipmuc tribes are their own separate entities but have cultural similarities.
Following the war the confederation reshaped Tribal and European relationships. When the tribes won they took back all their land, forcing the European invaders to return to Europe. However, those who fought against the confederation in the war were enslaved as a punishment for their involvement and their descendants are still around in this world today.
The confederation of tribes have lived peacefully for the majority of their history. There has been conflict within the confederation tribes as well as with tribes outside of the confederation. If the conflict was within the confederation the council would solve the problem together, but if the conflict was with external tribes the confederation would use its collective strength to remove the threat to their livelihood.
Since Metacom’s War the confederation has worked, fought, and traded together allowing the Pokanoket/Wampanoag, Narragansett, and Nipmuc tribes to thrive in their own right, until now. When the council formed the Sachems sitting on the council crafted a belt made of wampum, sinew, and deerskin to symbolize their new inter-tribal pact to maintain peace, share the land and rule collectively together. Each new generation of Sachems sitting on the council have added to the belt, turning this physical symbol of their council into their history. Over time the 9 virtues of Meshanticut made the belt their home. Now the sacred wampum belt has been broken up and missing, and the virtues alongside it.
