Letter from the Founder and CEO of Meshanticut, Raymond Two Hawks Watson:
“Meshanticut: The Tale of Masswascutt” (MTTM) is PCEI’s flagship initiative to kick off the Real Revolution 2036 in preparation for the 400th Year commemoration of Providence, Rhode Island.
MTTM is the first in a series of mixed-reality (physical, virtual, and augmented), quest-based cultural tourism experiences that PCEI is developing to establish a new cultural tourism infrastructure and framework for the Greater Providence cultural tourism sector intended to generate economy and articulate a new, unique, and invigorating narrative for Rhode Island’s tourism sector.
MTTM places visitors in the role of a young warrior from the lands of Meshanticut who is on a quest to recover the nine sacred virtues of Masswascutt (Greater Providence) in an effort to reunite the Nimmuoag (original people) and bring them back to the Path of Michachuck (the clear soul).
MTTM employs a multifaceted strategy comprised of living culture, hauntology, counterfactual and counter narrative history, monumentalism, magical realism, technology, and development of the built environment, allowing visitors to become informed and educated about the cultural narratives associated with the specific locations they are visiting through virtual and physical engagement.
Founded in the principles of cultural equity and sustainable cultural heritage tourism, MTTM serves as a testament to Rhode Island’s indigenous past and heritage that acknowledges and engages these communities as a thriving part of the vibrant fabric of Rhode Island’s contemporary “Living Culture.”
