Weybosset Patience Virtue Storyline & Potential Dialogue
[The player arrives at a fast-moving river in Weybosset. The river is in the northern part of Weboysett. There are animals drinking and scavenging for food from the river. There are trouts and salmon leaping out of the water and moving along with the current. The grass that surrounds the water is outrageously green. This river is very sacred to the tribes to provide for the people and it serves as a crossing place. The tribes rely heavily on the bridge that was built out of large rocks by their ancestors. There are large rocks scattered through the river that stretches all the way to the opposite side. The large rocks are placed to make traveling by foot easier. The people know when the speed and noise of the river are high that it is not safe to cross. But when the tribes hear a silent flow and the birds singing that it is safe to cross.]
HAWK- I will be guiding you through this challenge. Where your feet stand is a very sacred place to the tribes. Follow me, please.
[Player and Hawk walk to the edge of the water where the rock bridge begins]
HAWK- This place right here was an essential crossing place for the tribes. To leave Weybosset you must cross to the other side. The tribe’s ancestors built the bridge out of large rocks a very long time ago. Having this crossing place made it much easier to get to other trails that run along the water. Before the tribes had to go all the way around the water. Weybosset means a narrow crossing place. The tribes would walk from one side to other during low mid-tides. Weybosset is south of the convergence of two rivers, Woonasquatucket and Moshassuck. You must understand how vital this crossing was for the tribes to travel place to place.
Now, warrior I must tell you the deeper meaning of this virtue. This crossing place is sacred to the Narragansett tribes, you have been placed at the Patience virtue. Sometimes we are in such a hurry and we must not forget the journey it took for us to get somewhere. We must thank the sacred lands that we walk on and the water that we pass through that mother Earth has granted to us. With patience and trust we will get to where we need to go.
During your crossing of the river your patience will be tested, young warrior. But I must warn you about the Pukwudgies. There are many Pukwudgies that you will come in contact with. They are small tiny little hairy humans who are very mischievous. Sometimes they can be your friend and sometimes they will play games with you. They will not harm you but may be a distraction to you while you’re trying to get to the other side of the bridge. My second warning to you warrior, the Wendigo.... You do not want to come into contact with them. The tribes describe them as an evil spirit that looks half deer and half human. But you will come in contact with those Pukwudgies I described to you! Hurry! We must go now and deliver an important message to the tribe that awaits on the other side of the river!
[Player and Hawk arrive at the first large rock of the crossing bridge. Once the player steps on the first stepping stone they are placed in a “time bubble.” Player begins to hesitate. Everything around the player is completely still. This includes animals and the water of the river]
HAWK- My friend do not be afraid, this is all part of your challenge. Remember you must be patient and calm for this challenge. Everything around you seems to appear to stand still. Time will move regularly within this area while you are placed in this bubble. You must learn to be patient right now. The more you try to hurry up the crossing process and use force, the longer you will stay in the bubble. Remember we must deliver this message in time.
[Pukwudgie arrives]
Task one:
PUKWUDGIE- Hello, you must be this new warrior I heard about that has come to Meshanticut. Here is the thing I need you to catch 10 fish for my dinner tonight. If you do not catch the fish I will tell the Wendigo exactly where you are. Remember just because in the bubble everything seems to stand still on the outside does not mean things are actually standing still. That is just how you perceive it inside this bubble. Now, get me my fish before I start shouting “oh Wendigo!”
HAWK- Native tribes did a lot of spearfishing. Fish was a big part of their diets all throughout the year. The male Native Americans went spearfishing and the women would use simple systems with a hook on the end of a string. Women were not allowed to use spears. The seasons that were the optimal times for spearfishing are during the Winter and Spring. The shafts of the spears are made out of the wood and the tips were often made from copper or bone. Native tribes also used nets to fish. Women made the nets out of basswood and twine. They would apply herbal medicines to the net to attract the fish. The men would take the nets to the water. You must choose between my spear or net to catch the fish. What will it be like as a young warrior?
*Option 1
Player picks spear
[The player must throw a spear into the water until they catch a fish. Not every time they throw the spear a fish will be stabbed. It will take multiple tries until they get a fish. This is where their patience is tested. They must wait until they get 10 fish and place them into a bucket]
*Option 2
Player picks net
[The player must first add herbal medicine to the net in order to attract the fish. The player casts the net out and must wait for 10 fish to be in the net. This is testing patience by playing the waiting game for their net to fill]
Task is complete. Player gives the fish to Pukwudgie.
PUCKWUDGIE- Thank you warrior. You are secret safe with me now. But if we cross paths again I will not hesitate to call the Wendigos on you next time.
HAWK- Great job! Now, we still have time but we must hurry before time does run out!
[Players bubble floats to the next large rock]
Task two:
ELDERLY WOMAN- Help a young warrior, a Puckwudgie has stolen some of my crops! Some of them fell in the water. Can you please help an old woman out and retrieve them? Our tribe had a difficult season as it is. I don’t want to come back with no food to offer to our sister tribe.
TURTLE- Native Americans treasured the crops that the Earth offers to the people. No food shall ever go to waste and it’s a true shame when it does. For the Native Americans crops generally included corn, squash, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, peppers, sunflowers, wild rice, and potatoes.
Would you rather have 30 seconds to get all the crops and carry the women's basket? Or would you rather only carry 5 crops at a time and bring them back to the elder woman in 1 minute?
There are 20 crops that are scattered throughout the river. The player must retrieve them all and put them into the eldery woman’s basket.
*Option 1
30 second challenge
Player is given the basket
ELDERLY WOMAN- Please be careful with my basket my mother and I made when I was a child together. It is made from sweet grass. Please hurry before my crops are gone!
Player is timed for 30 seconds. The player must start all over until the basket has all 20 crops. If one falls out of the basket while retrieving, the player must start all over again.
*Option 2
1 minute challenge
ELDERLY WOMAN- Please be careful with my basket my mother and I made when I was a child together. It is made from sweet grass. Please hurry before my crops are gone!
The player can only carry five crops over to the basket. The player must move calmly so they don’t drop them. If a player does, they have to start over.
Task is complete. Player has gathered all 20 crops for the elder woman.
ELDERLY WOMAN- Thank you young warrior for your help! You were as calm as a toad in the sun.
[Players bubble floats to the final large rock]
Task three:
WENDIGO- This is where you stop warrior! You will not be able to pass me.
HAWK- Don’t let him get to you. Remember that we have to cross and deliver the message. We are so close!
WENDIGO- Don’t listen to that old hawk. I eat hawks like him for breakfast. I will let you pass. You just have to help me find my shell necklace with a metal pendant. It fell into the water as I was crossing. If you don’t help me I will take you to my cave and let my Wendigo children eat you.
TURTLE- Native Americans in the Eastern lands used many materials to create jewelry. Tribes would wear many accessories and trade with other tribes. In the Northeast tribes would use bones, shells, feathers, fur, and metal to make earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. Hurry we must get this necklace before he captures you!
Player is to use either to stay bubble or swim to find the necklace
*Option 1
The player must wait until they can spot the necklace in the blurry water. The player may not be able to see the necklace right away because of the fish and rocks in the water. This is an i-spy game that takes patience.
*Option 2
Player must swim in the bubble to find the necklace. The bubble appears to make everything blurry while in the water. The player must spot the shine of the pendant.
Player gives the Wendigo his necklace.
WENDIGO- I will let you pass me this one time because you helped me. But next time I see you I will not. You are lucky I lost my prized possession and needed the help. You better wish you never see me again.
Task is complete and the player lands on the other side of the water. Player’s bubble pops and feet are on land.
HAWK- You did it young warrior! Your patience was challenged and you were able to cross in time to deliver the message. You have learned that it takes patience if you want to get somewhere. You will always face challenges but will get there in time if you are calm. If you are patient you will succeed. You are allowed to advance to the next virtue, young warrior.
The player receives the talisman.
Woonasquatucket- Strength/Self-sufficiency Virtue
Introduction to Woonasquatucket:
[The player will be placed in a spot along the Woonasquatucket river and notice that the tribe that has taken shelter at this spot has become extremely reliant on surrounding tribes. This is a problem because the river has just changed course causing the tribe to be cut off from their surrounding tribes. The player will enter the tribe and help to restore strength and self sufficiency among this tribe. The River Spirit will greet the player once they arrive.]
[ River spirit introduces Woonasquatucket]
River spirit: Welcome young warrior! To the sacred site of Woonasquatucket which translates to “where the salt water ends.” This strong flowing river is approximately 19 miles long, flowing from the northwest of Mechanticut lands, downward into the Moshassuck River.
[River changes course while the River spirit is greeting the young warrior]
River Spirit: Oh no! The river has just changed its course, cutting us off from the surrounding tribes who have been supplying us with help on how to survive. We need your help, young warrior to help restore self-sufficiency and strength among our tribe.
[player will then be assigned three different tasks, which will be completed by scanning QR codes located around the given location for Woonasqutucket]
River Spirit: Fish are an important step in fertilizing our crops. Thus it is important we learn how to fish within the river to gain access to the fish. Young warrior, will you help with the task of learning how to catch fish?
[The player will then be advised to find the QR code associated with the fishing task and scan it. After scanning the QR code the player will be prompted to the next task.]
River Spirit: Thank you young warrior for restoring our knowledge on catching fish with the Woonasqutucket! These fish are very helpful for creating our rich soil for our crops. Your next task will be to help the tribe in planting our crops now that we have the materials needed to fertilize the land.
[Player will then be prompted to search for the QR code that coincides with the planting crops task. After scanning the planting crops QR code the player's screen will show a change in seasons and prompt them for their last task.]
River Spirit: Now that you have successfully helped us plant our crops. It is now time to harvest all our hard work!
[Player will find the last QR code that represents the harvesting task. After finding and scanning the code player will then be brought back to the river spirit where he will give the player a miniature oak tree talisman that will mark the tasks as complete earning the virtue of strength/self-sufficiency]
Neutaconkanut (Humility Virtue Storyline w/ potential dialogue points)
[The player arrives at the boundary mark of the Providence settlement before the mountain, where the river flows through nearby Antaghantic Neck. They are presented with land that is bountiful, yet this bounty is only present based on the decisions that will be made. The environment is fruitful and open, with land spread throughout the mountain and below it at the overlook from the hill to the river flowing through.]
HAWK - Welcome to Neutoconkanut, known as ‘home of the squirrels,’ atop this hill overlooking the nippe flowing below. Here, Moattôqussand the Maheegan, which is the Algonquian word for the Wolf, is the squaws (woman) sucki (black) wolf spirit of this land. She protects this land as the Wauchaunut yet has been locked up because of disrespect to the environment. As you can see, the area you are currently seeing is sacred and must be handled with great care.
[Walk up the hill to the top]
The Algonquian tribe believes that the environment and the people who live amongst it should have a deep connection with it. Treating the land with respect is important and developing a bond is one of the reasons I am responsible for looking after this land. As you can imagine, hunting and gathering can be a wonderful way to survive. However, one virtue that young, prosperous warriors such as yourself might forget about is humility. It is believed that those who are too greedy and selfish will be met with Wendigo, a deer-like being with eyes of hot coal that is slender and long, who will deal with them accordingly. They thrive in nippe, so beware as you approach the river nearby.
Don’t fear! If you complete these tasks in this land and stay on the humble path, you will be rewarded with the talisman and will be protected by the Wolf with the freed virtue of humility, which is becoming of warriors. You are being brought into a world of spiritual visits that are supernatural from cultural creations of the tribes; this is no insignificant event.
[A pukwudgie enters]
PUKWUDGIE - Greetings, warrior! I am a pukwudgie, and I am here to help you along your journey to access the virtue of humility. What would you say if I showed you the virtue right now with the talisman so you can move on from this breezy hill?
HAWK - Watch out! Various native tribes believe that pukwudgies are deceptive little skeetomps (men) who like to play tricks on human beings, even if it appears that they want to help you. Some can be helpful, but Wampanoag folklore believes they can be mischievous and play tricks on human beings who are not kind to them. They have superhuman powers, including shape shifting, invisibility, and could do anything to lure you to your downfall, if they so choose.
PUKWUDGIE - So, what will it be, young warrior? [Option of virtue, which he holds within fire OR Listening to the Spirit Guide]
* Option 1 *
PUKWUDGIE - Well, I see you made the easy choice. Here you go!
[The fire burns out and reveals a talisman, yet it begins melting. This is too dangerous and hot to touch.]
Take the talisman! What are you waiting for?
[You have angered him. Suddenly, the Pukwudgie reveals a bow and arrow and shoots a poison arrow in your direction and you must return to the bottom of the hill to start the level again for making the wrong decision.]
Foolish human, you chose the short pathway because you felt it was the wiser, faster choice. With a humble heart, this would not have happened. Return to the bottom, and only return if you dare and are willing to be a worthy warrior.
* Option 2 *
HAWK - Great job, young warrior! This was the first test to assess your humility. A worthy warrior is humble, not prideful, and makes the right decisions, despite the cost to oneself.
[You are taken around the hilltop, overlooking the waters below.]
HAWK - Now that you have seen the value of humility in your choices, it will be vital in this next task to hold true to this virtue and stay on the path of humbleness in your walk as a warrior to release the Wolf from being chained to this place. The land is sacred in tribe traditions and hunters have been challenged to utilize all resources obtained for the benefit of many rather than for oneself, straying away from exploiting the Earth for what benefit it can give to that one person alone. And yet, they are failing. The people of the mountain have begun to lean more and more on their pride instead of practicality when it comes to hunting. Rather than hunting just what the people need, they over hunt as a way of showing they are “the best hunter,” which has had a lasting impact on the area and its wildlife. The hunters must learn to move past their pride before the area runs out of wildlife to hunt, or before they begin to hunt bigger prey.
You will now be challenged to hunt, being mindful of the land in which you are taking from. Would you like the help of a Pukwudgie (they are known for their skills as little hunters with their bow and arrow) or would you prefer hunting on your own?
* Option 1 *
[Pukwudgie enters, with bow and arrow]
PUKWUDGIE - In the face of turbulent weather or invasions from rival tribes, it is imperative that we do our best to hunt and gather resources for ourselves to survive! Quick, there is a flock of wild birds. Take them down!
[Player scans QR code to unlock challenge; uses bow and arrow and plays this mini-game (an animation; or it happens immediately upon hearing the Pukwudgie in a live action simulation game)]
HAWK - Young warrior! You have taken down (x) number of birds in this hunting spree and have left no resources for your neighboring tribes who left you these wild berries to eat. Now, because of your pride, social rifts are sure to arise against you, ultimately hurting not only yourself but the entire tribe.
You must be conscious of the land and strengthen your bond between the environment, cultivating resources in a way that is not overly boastful or greedy. A noble warrior is not made from being prideful and selfish. You have failed this task and will now face the consequences of your actions.
[From the base of the hill, the Wendigo evil spirit is seen emerging.]
WENDIGO - I am the spirit of greed and selfishness, sent to punish men by killing them. I will spare you for now, but you must return to the base of the hill and begin the level again for your selfish choices.
*Option 2 *
HAWK - Although the pukwudgie is a scrappy and cunning hunter, this pathway would have led you astray from one of the nine sacred virtues: humility. Without this important trait, a warrior cannot thrive in this world nor on Neutaconkanut, among other places, and the Wolf would not be able to move from this land.
Look there, a wild turkey. Although it’s life is meaningful and has value, utilizing the entire bird to sustain you on your journeys gives you just enough to be content along with the berries left by the community surrounding you (and now, because of your humble hunting ways, there will be no social rifts to tear down the land and the tribes that depend on it’s resources.) Well done!
Due to your choices in these two tasks so far, you are on the right path to earning the virtue of humility and freeing the Wolf spirit. Also, the pukwudgie has settled down and can be of assistance to you as a reward for your successful decisions. A humble warrior is patient and appreciative, and the pukwudgie’s mischievous spirits have been calmed back to allow them to be a good-natured hunting assistant.
PUKWUDGIE - I have been inspired by you, warrior! I will continue with you along your journey to obtain the virtue of humility and free Moattôqussand the Maheegan!
HAWK - You can trust him moving forward.
[Suddenly, a canoe pops up. It has been abandoned and seems to be fully intact.]
It is up to you whether to trust that the canoe is safe and can lead you down the river. Remember: a humble warrior is not prideful or greedy.
[You elect to hop into the canoe after searching around for any owners/damage and all seems well as Memegwesi appears.]
MEMEGWESI - I am Memegwesi, a small nippe spirit inhabiting this river.
HAWK - Because of your respect for the river and environment, the memegwesi will allow you to have a steady, calm ride along the river. Without respect, this spirit could have derailed your canoe and might have stolen your previous talismans, which might have threatened to trap the guardians of the previous virtues once more.
[Along the way, a small family with a child is stranded on the river, with their canoe derailed.]
Look there. They were not being respectful of the land and memegwesi blew their canoe from the water into ruin. Would you like to help them or leave them there?
* Option 1 *
[You decide to continue forward, without stopping. The family is shown being overtaken by the nippe and are cast away into the river’s suddenly intense flow, coming over your canoe and sending you back to the previous virtue.]
HAWK - Because of your lack of helpfulness and regard for others because of your pride, you are not worthy of obtaining the virtue of humility and thus are banished from this land until you learn how to be a humble warrior and can help to free the Wolf spirit.
[The player must return to the previous virtue and start the level over again.]
* Option 2 *
[You decide to stop and help the family, who are very appreciative of your time and humbleness as a young warrior and you continue along your journey, with calm waters and grateful guests.]
WOLF - You have proved yourself to be a warrior filled with humility and great humbleness based on your decisions along your journey. Thank you for making choices that the great spirits of the Algonquin tribe and other native tribes value, with attributes that will guide you in your adventure as you continue forward. You have unlocked the virtue of humility, thereby freeing Moattôqussand the Maheegan who can be of assistance to you in your next quests.
[You have completed the tasks and have pleased the wolf spirit, earning the talisman, which is a Maheegan miniature, made of quartz, to protect and guide you to remember the importance of having humility as a young warrior.]
Mashapaug- Unity virtue
[This is the starting point for the game]
Overview: * The storyline that has been provided about the premise of the game will be inserted here*
[The player arrives at Mashapaug pond where they are presented in a park-like setting. The pond has the potential to be beautiful, yet has been polluted due to the recent industrialization of the area. There are picnic tables and fishing areas that the player will be seeing]
Narrator: Welcome warrior to the lands of Mashapaug. This pond holds great value to the Narragansett tribes, as this land is home to the Unity virtue. The Unity virtue can be identified as a water spirit who keeps our value of togetherness in tact. Her name that you can call upon is Nippe-anit the Big Pond. We, members of the Narragansett tribe, use this pond as a spiritual place, where we can gather our families, hunt, fish, and let the children swim amongst the wildlife. This pond holds near to our heart, in which it is a place of great gathering, and implies togetherness. We have since been betrayed. The neighborhoods around us were once filled with kind families, and was home to the first homeowners that were people of color. The European government has decided to discard the neighborhood and industrialize the land. This has ruined our grounds and we place the blame on the leaders of who damaged our land. We are calling on you to help us restore Mashapaug and save the Unity virtue! The hawk will guide you to the first task.
[Player will be led by the hawk to Mashapaug Pond]
Indigenous main character leader of the tribe: “Thank you for coming to help us save the Unity virtue! Welcome to Mashapaug which means “large standing water”. The challenge we are asking of you results from the distrust of my tribe and European greed. This distrust stems from governmental powers taking over our lands for their own benefit. However, during this unpredictable time the tribe has been divided and the blame has been passed around. We must restore trust! Help us to restore the trust and you will be granted a talisman that allows you to advance!
[player moves toward the pond, the area of concern, where they will be directed to task one]
Task one:
[player will approach a member of the tribe for directions]
Hawk: Warrior! Look to the tribe members to reveal your task!!
Tribe member: We are in dire need of your help warrior! The Nanepaushat (moon) is full tonight and we need to clean the Nippe (water) before sun down! Please clean up this mess to advance! In order to do this we need you to clear the trash from the perimeter of Mashapaug pond. We also need the water to be clean and not contaminated! Find the source of the contaminated water to advance.
*Option 1:
Player agrees to proceed with the task
[Player will then clear the water by picking up hypothetical trash: this will be done through finding the QR code that coincides with trash]
[“Clearing” the contaminated water by blocking the source: this will be done through finding the QR code to scan that coincides with the source of contamination]
*Option 2
Player sides with the european involvement
[player will find QR code for agreement, and directed to restart the level]
[player proceeds to follow the task to unlock task 2]
Task 2:
[player is congratulated on their success and a child of the tribe will lead them to the hunters and gatherers of the tribe]
Child of the tribe character: Follow me warrior I will lead you to your next task! You will meet the pukwudgies, the hunter gatherers, in order to obtain your materials! Oh look there is one now!
[player will scan QR code to unlock pukwudgies characters]
Pukwudgies: Hey there warrior. I am here to provide you with the materials you will need in order to obtain the fish, or what we call naumaus. The naumaus need to be obtained in order for you to gain our trust. We ask of you, warrior, to return with at least two naumaus. Be careful not to obtain any of the tunusapogs or turtles, as they live peacefully in Mashapaug. If you fail to return, you will have to restart the task. Good luck in the upcoming tasks dear warrior.
*Option 1:
[player will find the QR codes that coincide with the fish and ignore the ones that are associated with the turtles. The hawk companion will be available to answer questions and help the warrior]
*Option 2:
[player angers the pukwudgies as they do not trust them. They will then be sent to find extra “fishing” materials in order to unlock the next task]
Task 3:
[player is lead to the storyteller of the group who will present the means to obtaining the talisman]
Storyteller: Mashapaug, the land in which we gather, home to our very own unity virtue. We gather in this place as a symbol of togetherness. We originated in Rhode Island 30,000 years ago, made by the Creator, Cautonuit. We consider this one of our sacred grounds. We lived amongst neighborhoods of different cultures in unison. This neighborhood was peaceful and we granted this land as a place of great meeting. Everything changed once the lands began to be taken over by industrialization. Our neighbors were pushed out as they could not accommodate the changes that were being asked. Thus, the land had been stained with pollution. We have faith in our unity virtue to repair these needs. You can find the talisman on the shores where the water virtue resides. You will pick it out young warrior through the description I shall give you: it is a granite stone shaped as a small bowl.
[The hawk companion will lead the player to the direction of the talisman]
Hawk: Remember young warrior, the talisman is disguised, but if you look closely you will find the talisman that is shaped as a small bowl.
[player obtains the talisman located on the perimeter of Mashapaug pond disguised as a rock]
[player must return the stone back to the storyteller to unleash the unity virtue and restore the trust in the community]
[storyteller will direct player to reveal the unity virtue: scanning the QR code the coincides with the water spirit]
[The Unity virtue character dialogue directed at the player]
Thank you for releasing me and restoring the trust of our tribe! This sacred land is a symbol of togetherness. In order for me to guard my lands, our tribe must be together! I am here to ensure that we stay unified as a community. We value togetherness, and it being ruined has been a struggle for all of us. Therefore, as a sign of thanks I grant you this talisman. This is just the starting point to save our tribe warrior, go on to the next path to restore the remaining virtues for our tribes! You will be the faith we have to restore our communities within Meshanticut.
[The hawk will guide the player to the next location/task]
