Meshanticut operates as a confederacy, built on the many tribes that came together to form the nation. Each of these tribes have their own independent sachem to sit on a council to collaboratively rule in the face of large problems. This council meets biannually to assess the current state of the nation and address any issues that have come to light over that course of time. Overall, the the land itself is mostly divided on the basis of whoever works that land is its owner. In terms of Meshanticut's legal system, most crimes are handled by officials of the offending individual's tribe, with the authority of the judge being determined by the severity of the crime. The most serious crimes in the nation are handled by the sachem council, with the final decision resting on the sachem of the tribe that the perpetrator belongs to. Certain crimes are centered around cultural taboos. For example, it is considered a great crime to harm the Wampum belt or disturb the virtues in any significant way.
