In the Narragansett tribe, at this time, there were two kinds of leaders: political leaders, and religious leaders. The political leaders were called Sachems, and the religious leaders were called powwows (shamans in English). Both of these types of leaders had power and sachems would often consult with powwows before making serious decisions. Both of these leaders sometimes followed bloodlines.1
