In the original Narragansett language, Tuncowsden means “it is frozen.” In 1636, Roger Williams built his first home in historic College Hill. According to Chris Healy, “College Hill was the site of the first permanent colonial settlement in Rhode Island.”
College Hill is definitely the most accurate name for this region. Both Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design are located in this neighborhood. These colleges offer residents “an urban suburban mix feel,” that contributes to the night life and vibrancy to the area.
This neighborhood is a relatively wealthier part of Providence. “College Hill has a median family income of nearly three times that of the city as a whole.” Presently, the Providence Preservation Society has taken efforts to renovate and maintain the beauty of the historic homes that give this community an authentic and classic aesthetic.
College Hill has a plethora of delicious restaurants that both locals and tourists enjoy. Some recommended restaurants and cafes include: Mill’s Tavern, Hemenway’s Restaurant, New Rivers Restaurant,Café Choklad, Den Den Café Asiana. There are plenty of fancy and casual eateries. When visiting College Hill, you can reserve a room at The Old Court Bed and Breakfast as well. Of course, these are just a few of the countless chic spots to eat, shop, and visit.

There are so many different attractions that College Hill has to offer. From museums and cinemas (Avon Cinema ) to libraries (Providence Athenaeum Library ) and churches (The Historic First Baptist Church In America, First Unitarian Church), there are plenty of attractions that are worth visiting and experiencing.
