Mooshassuck means ‘great brook in the marshy meadow; great fish; meadow,’ The modern-day neighborhood that surrounds the Mooshassuck area is called Mount Hope.
Mount Hope is a beautiful neighborhood that works for the betterment of the community in a plethora of different ways. To start, within the community is the Billy Taylor House, a nonprofit that provides youth engagement for the young adults that populate the area. Mount Hope is a neighborhood that seeks to help those in low to moderate income households. Mt. Hope Neighborhood Association and WIC Program. They are not associated with any government WIC programs.
Although there is an authentic history embedded in Mount Hope, there are also many modernized and interesting places that Mount Hope has to offer. For example, Billy Taylor’s abandoned property (185 Camp Street) was renovated into a cafe and Poke bowl eatery. This popular spot, Hometown Cafe and Poké Bar, only adds to the rich history and vibrancy of the town. Mount Hope is also considered progressive and modernized because of its liberal ideals. Mount Hope is home to the Thomas C Slater Compassion Center.

Mount Hope also holds the North Burial Ground, which is the first public cemetery in Providence. It is 110 acres and surrounded by beautiful landscaping. Back in the time of Roger Williams, there was still separation of church and state, so most people had individual, private burial sections for their loved ones. In 1700, the North Burial Ground opened its gates to deceased peoples of all backgrounds and faiths.
Billy Taylor Park, named after William Taylor, who founded Pleasant Street Peasants (PSP) which worked to provide the youth with fun activities that they normally wouldn’t have access to. Taylor died in 1986. Billy Taylor park was named in his honor. One beautiful part of the park was a mural that was created with the help of the locals in the town. Creating this mural required the collaboration of both the youths and the elders of the town. The mural honors the musical history of the town, specifically its rich Jazz history.
