The meaning of the name “Masswascutt” translates to “land between the rivers.” The rivers that define the loose borders of Masswascutt are the Moshassuck River and the Woonasquatucket River. When looking at modern day Providence, the neighborhood of Smith Hill would encapsulate this region the closest. Smith Hill is an urban neighborhood in Providence with increasing minority demographics. Currently, the populations are counted as such: 12.2% black, 20% Hispanic/Latino, and 17.2% Asian. This diversity of this region has notably increased since 1990. However, the mainstream culture of the area hasn’t made much of a noticeable shift to complement this increase. Popular restaurants include Pat’s Pub (Irish pub scene), Capitol Hill Diner (diner style breakfast), and Newport Creamery who are known for their milkshakes. Interestingly, the neighborhood proximity to the two rivers named above have provided power for industrial mills of the past, but now it is best known as the home of the Rhode Island State House in downtown (hence Capitol Hill Diner). Other relevant destinations include the Roger Williams National Memorial, Veterans Memorial Auditorium, and The Independence Trail. Free historical tours of the region are available and said to cover 1200 years of Rhode Island History.
