Teacher Message

Dear Families,

We will be supporting your at home learning with new activities each week. These activities can help you stay connected to school and social emotional learning during our school closure.

Please reach out to us via email if you have any questions or concerns.

Activities

Primary Social Activity: Listening and following directions

We are going to practice our skills for listening and following directions by playing “Simon Says”. First, review the rules with everyone who will play the game with you.

Remember the rules are:

1. Rule 1 is, if I say, “Simon says,” do what I ask you to do.

2. Rule 2 is, if I don’t say “Simon says,” keep doing what you’re doing until I say “Simon says” again.

Steps:

1. Say: Simon says. Say and show an action: Reach your hands up high!

2. Students reach their hands up high

3. Omit “Simon says,” but say and show another action

4. Students continue to reach their hands up high. If they make a mistake, say: I see this is a challenging game. Let’s see we can all remember the Simon Says rules.

Movement Suggestions: touch your toes, reach up high, march in place, etc.

It is important not to eliminate people from the game. We want everyone to participate our listening and following directions skills.

Listening game for all

We are going to practice our skills for listening with all ages by playing sentence switcheroo.

Rules

You’re going to listen to me read a sentence twice. There are three rules for you to follow:

Rules

1. Rule 1 is, if one word is different the second time I read the sentence, sit down.

2. Rule 2 is, if more than one word is different the second time I read the sentence, reach up high

3. Rules 3 is, if no words are different, stay standing

Steps

1. Read one of the sentences below once, slowly and clearly.

2. Read the sentence again. Randomly change one or more words, or no words.

3. Students respond with actions, (One-word change means reach up high; two-or-more word changes mean sit down; no words changed means stay standing.)

4. Play two or three rounds

Sentence examples:

1) The cat is playing.

2) Today is not my birthday.

3) Can I play soccer with my friend?

4) I can spell the word “because” with my eyes closed.
