Soft Launch and Series of Seminars
February 2-4, 2023
February kicked off with the launching of the Center for General Education of MSU-IIT (CGEM).
The launching was attended by the University officials and faculty members from different colleges who are handling GE courses. The opening program was followed by a series of lectures and workshops that aim to flesh out the philosophical framework of MSU-IIT’s GE Curricula - the S.H.I.F.T. Framework - which is an abbreviation for SOCIETY-ORIENTED, HOLISTIC (and INCLUSIVE), INNOVATION-DRIVEN, FUTURE-READY, and TRANSFORMATIVE. This calls to mind that the landscape has changed, the tools and the clienteles (our students) have changed, likewise, the demands have changed; in fact, the demands have become overwhelmingly high and varied. It is, therefore, imperative for teachers of General Education to be constantly pondering on the readiness to let go of old ways and to look for newer and more proactive paradigms that will make teachers even more relevant. Relevance is key to maintaining the position as academics in this age where technology permeates in almost all aspects of life. And pedagogies have to constantly the needs and preferences of students. Learning opportunities should be meaningful and relevant to their current and future needs. More importantly, their learning environment should enable students to make sense of their learning, such that it will all be relevant to their immediate communities and to the society in general.
Implementation of Large Classes
February 2023
The Academic Panel Committee (APC) has approved the implementation of the large classes, which piloted in February, the beginning of the second semester of AY 2022-2023, for selected General Education Courses (GEC), to wit, Purposive Communication, Contemporary World, and Ethics. This is a pedagogical strategy which aims to improve faculty research productivity since they are deloaded from their teaching tasks, while, it attempts to minimize the university’s expenditures, particularly lecturers’ pay. Moreover, the strategy intends to enhance the teaching skills of some undergraduate and graduate students who may have the proclivity to become academics in the future as they have been designated as teaching assistants for the entire semester in these classes.
Other than this, CGEM has also helped in the following:
