Vertical Bandsaw

Vertical bandsaws use a revolving bandsaw to make vertical cuts through material. The bandsaw should be used for mostly soft materials such as wood, plastic, and sometimes aluminum. The bandsaw has a guide, but should not be used to make precise cuts. When using this machine, the upper saw blade guide should be lowered to 1/8" above the top of the workpiece. You should use this machine to cut material and shape your hammer handle once you have laser etched the outline.

  • Make sure to use a push stick when working with small parts!

  • If the piece you are working with is not perfectly flat, it is okay to move the upper blade guide up a little so that you don't run your part into the guard. However, the upper guide should not be further than 1/4" from your workpiece (both for safety and quality of cut).

Materials

Mostly soft materials, such as wood, plastic and sometimes aluminum.

Note that there are three types of bandsaw blades stocked in the shop. Typically, the blades kept on the machines are to cut wood. If you plan to spruce it up and cut a different material, make sure to check with a proctor to make sure you use the right blade for the right materials.
