Lathe

Lathes are used to perform machining operations on parts that have circular geometry. The workpiece, which must have a circular cross-section, is held in the lathe chuck. The lathe may be used with different cutting tools, including cutting bits, parting tools, and drill bits. The workpiece then rotates at high speeds to allow the cutting tools to remove material. The cutting tool is then moved parallel, perpendicular, or at an angle to the part to control the lathe operation. The digital readout (DRO) provides coordinates that allow the user to control the mill at precisions of up to 0.0005". E4 students use the lathe to reduce the diameter and shape their hammer heads, hard faces, and soft faces.
