RDL

The Rapid Design Lab (RDL) is the prototyping studio of the machine shop. Here, you can find our 3D printers and laser cutters, which can be used for free whenever the shop is open. 3D printers are good for printing light-duty parts and prototypes, as well as artistic or functional everyday objects. For regular printing use, our Lulzbot Taz 6 printers will print PLA, ABS, PETG, nylon, and most other common filaments. For special applications, we also have Markforged Mark X7 (special filaments) and Dimension 1200es (dissolvable support) printers available for use, although you will have to talk to a proctor to use these.

For 2D applications, our Epilog Mini 24 Laser Cutter is great for etching and cutting plywood, acrylic, MDF, and even paper. For larger applications, we have a new laser cutter that I don't have the info for yet.

Use 3D printing for hard-to machine shapes, lightweight designs, and low-stress applications

Use laser cutting for 2D or almost 2D shapes. It is best for cutting out or engraving flat wood, fiberboard, and plastic.
