Title: Magnetic materials development for spintronics and magnetoacoustics: Layered FeGe2, van-der-Waals Fe5GeTe2 and Heusler alloys
Venue: Faculty of Engineering Bldg. 2, 3F, EEIS conference room 1 & Online
Abstract: During my talk, I will review our recent achievements with respect to the materials development of magnetic materials at PDI towards spintronic and magnetoacoustic applications.
In the first part, I will report about a metastable α-FeGe2 layered phase synthesized at wafer-scale using a combination of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and solid-phase epitaxy (SPE) synthesized at wafer-scale on GaAs(001) substrates. Comprehensive X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the formation of the layered FeGe2 allotrope (space group P4mm) which does not exist as a bulk. Spin transport investigations have revealed a metallic behavior of a-FeGe2 films and strikingly, the results also indicate a ferromagnet (FM) – antiferromagnet (AFM) phase transition where the films are FM at low temperatures.
In the second part, I will report on the large-area epitaxial growth by MBE of FM Fe(5-x)GeTe2 /2D-van-der-Waals heterostructures. As 2D-van-der-Waals templates, we utilize graphene and WSe2. Structural characterizations show the good crystalline quality of the epitaxial films on both 2D templates. Most importantly, magnetotransport and SQUID magnetometry investigations show an FM order above room temperature and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy for both van-der-Waals heterostructures.
In the third part, if time permits, I will briefly talk about a large nonreciprocal propagation of surface acoustic waves in epitaxial FM Heusler-alloy/semiconductor hybrid structures. The nonreciprocity reaches values up to 20%, one of the highest values reported so far.
