The Maritime Empires
The Spanish Empire conquered the vast majority of the New World as a notable maritime empire. Their colonization started with Christopher Columbus in 1492.
They colonized most of North and South America along with the Philippines.
The Portuguese Empire was another notable maritime empire, that colonized Brazil along with parts of Africa and India. The empire began in 1415 when Portugal conquered the city of Ceuta from Morrocco.
The Portuguese colonized Brazil, parts of West and East Africa, parts of India, and the city of Macau in China.
The British were late to Colonization, but still played a very notable role in colonization and the Columbian Exchange, establishing colonies in North America, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and other Caribbean islands.

Summary
The Columbian Exchange was the exchange of people, goods, plants, technology, and diseases during the 1500's through 1700's between the Americas, Africa, and Europe. This exchange was conducted primarily by the Spanish, Portuguese, and English/British, although France and the Dutch were involved as well. Slaves were brought from Africa to the Americas, plants and other goods from America went to Europe, who distributed firearms and manufactured goods to both Africa and the Americas.
