A podcast is a digital audio file that is accessible online and can be listened to via streaming or downloading on your phone, computer, or device. It usually comes as part of a series of shows. Podcasting is more or less your own Internet radio show: anyone can make one with some equipment (basic computer or phone with microphone, headphones), basic audio editing skills and access to the Internet.
The most crucial thing about podcasting is that it supports self-representation. You get to choose the topic, how you tell your story, how you edit your story and who hears it.
This guide will walk you through the process of creating a podcast project in these steps:
Brainstorm a name, topic and format. Consider what is the premise, who is the audience, what is the format of your podcast? Plan the specifics of each episode
Prepare interview questions or audio script. If you're interviewing a guest, research them and decide on at least 15 questions to as. If the podcast is narrative, draft an audio script
Assemble your equipment. Use what you have at hand, like your phone and laptop. Or borrow equipment from Cooper Library - equipment is loaned for three days. Or use the audio studio in Cooper Library
Record all original audio. Record your interviews or the body of your audio script then record your intros and outros and any transitions between segments
Record or download additional assets. Find properly licensed music to set the mood of your audio project. Use sound effects to add aural texture
Edit audio. Use Adobe Audition to edit together all of your media. Use this guide to learn how to use Adobe Audition
Upload podcast to Soundcloud or other hosting platform. Soundcloud is a free platform for hosting audio files. Most professional podcasts use paid platforms, like Libsyn. Try to get your podcast on iTunes for a wider listener base
Promote your project. Make a website, twitter, etc for your podcast. Ask people who listen to write reviews
