The Zulu are a group of Nguni speaking individuals who make up the largest ethic group in South Africa. They share a lot of similarities with other ethnic groups such as the Swazi and the Xhosa in terms of language and culture. They primarily live in the KwaZulu-Natal Provenience in South Africa, which is on the eastern shores of South Africa. The Zulu Nation originally started as multiple smaller groups of individuals, until Zulu Chieftans grew their military power to conquer other tribes. Eventually, warrior-king Shaka conquered all of the tribes in Zululand, uniting them into the nation they are today.
One important aspect of the Zulu culture is the way they choose to dress. For women, they typically dress based on their current marital status. Single women dress in a way to show off their bodies by wearing skirts made of grass or beads, while married or engaged women wear more cloth in order to show they are taken, and show respect to their in laws. As for men, they wear an umqhele which is a type of headband, an amambatha to go over the shoulders, an ibheshu which acts as pants, an umcedo which is what they use as underwear, and imbadada which is what they use as shoes (Siyabona Africa).
The Zulu are traditionally farmers, and focus mostly on grain and vegetables. Because of this they are vegetarians for the most part. They do however, own cattle, which they mostly use for milk, but also for food on certain special occasions.
The Zulu also have multiple different marital practices that they use, one of which being polygamy. In these polygamous relationships, the "Great Wife", which is the mother of the husbands heir, ranks these wives. The Zulu also practice levirate, which is when the wife of a man who has died will marry his brother. They will also continue to have children in honor of their dead husband. Overall, the Zulu have a very patriarchal society (Bitannica).
Because of the European colonizers in South Africa, the Zulu ended up adopting a lot of Christianity into their religious practices, however they combined this with a lot of their own religion as well. The believe mostly in the idea of ancestral spirits, and frequently give them offerings and sacrifices. They also believe strongly in magic, and tend to treat things they don't understand as something sent by an angry spirit (South African History Online).
