Are some types of knowledge more useful than others?
In this exhibition, I will use the definition of knowledge relating to justified true belief. Furthermore, in the context of this exhibition I will also use the definition of useful as more practical and more often used than other types of knowledge.
In relation to the prompt, it depends on the context of the type of knowledge presented. Different fields of inquiry and Areas of Knowledge require different types of knowledge to answer, and this can lead to different types of knowledge being more useful than others in different situations.
1. My 2000 c5 corvette.
This is my 2000 C5 Corvette. it is one of the two cars that I own (the other car can be seen in the background), and I drive it everyday to and from school, the gym, local car meets, and it can fit a double bass in the back so that every Sunday I can drive over 30 miles to play in an advanced orchestra that I participate in. If it breaks down, I am able to repair it using my knowledge of cars to help save myself money and expand my knowledge of how cars work. For example, recently I had a bad oil pressure switch that started leaking oil all over the back of the engine. It could have been multiple issues, but I was able to properly diagnose the issue because I knew that it was a common issue with these cars. Right now the glove box is not in place and in addition the passenger side pop up headlight won't go down without making a grinding sound. I know that the headlight gear is a common issue, so I will start there. In my current life, fixing issues on my cars is an everyday task. This makes knowledge of cars and basic mechanic skills very useful. To help further explain my point, I find that I use my knowledge of cars more often than I use biology, due to the fact that I do not perform any tasks that require any knowledge of biology. This makes my knowledge of cars more useful in my life compared to other types of knowledge.
2. My copy of Rich Dad Poor Dad, by Robert T. Kiyosaki.
I am determined to create generational wealth for my future family, and to try to make the lives of those around me as great as possible to the best of my ability. Although I am young, I have great ambitions to retire early and enjoy many amazing experiences for the rest of my life. This book teaches about the habits of the most wealthy people, specifically regarding the financial habits and knowledge that they possess. The knowledge of how to achieve success and how to handle money is passed down from wealthy parents to their children, however in my case it is not available. Coming from a family that is not necessarily wealthy considering the context of the area that I live in, I must resort to outside sources for this information. This book helps people in my situation to realize the path to success, and how to start on that path. I am aware that not many of my peers desire this path, or the future that I desire. Taking this into account, it can be said that the information and knowledge that this book contains is only useful to people in my situation with my ambitions, which is a small percentage of people. For example, many peers would like to study engineering. This information is relevant to their future, and therefore they possess knowledge that is not relevant or useful to me, because I do not desire that path. This can help further the idea that some types of knowledge are more useful than others based on the context of the scenario it is being used in.
3. My Double Bass
With the idea of college applications approaching so soon, I want to stand out for colleges. I have played double bass for 6 years now, and doing well playing my double bass could help me achieve the scholarship that I need for college. I play in both my school orchestra, as well as play in an advanced extracurricular orchestra every Sunday. Playing double bass has provided me with the opportunity to obtain knowledge not just regarding playing an instrument, but knowledge I gain from playing bass has an effect on my work ethic as well. Playing bass has given me knowledge about discipline and working hard on something for extended periods of time. It has also taught me about deadlines, for example with a solo, recital, competition, or audition coming up, I must plan in advance to make sure that I am ready by those deadlines. This knowledge is useful in my life due to the fact that I want to succeed by making it into a good college, and the knowledge that I have gained from playing double bass will help me make it there. For example, people that do not play an instrument yet have great grades would not find it difficult to make it into the college that they would like to attend, and would find playing an instrument for college time consuming and useless in helping them to meet their goals. This shows that there are different types of knowledge, and that they are more useful in some situations than others. It depends on the situation, and the most useful type of knowledge is able change.
These three objects help to show that different types of knowledge are more useful than others, however the most useful type is subject to change due to the context that the knowledge is being applied.
