What is the relationship between personal experience and knowledge?
Object: Mini Plastic Rubber Bands
Recently on social media many celebrities have really cute hairstyles that are fascinating. When you search on TikTok you would see mini rubber hair ties being used for most celebrity hairstyles. Multiple times I have looked at tiktok and tried to recreate the hairstyle. I've practiced multiple times and failed, thinking it was my technique that was wrong. After a while I gave up for a few months.
It wasn't until a couple days ago when I figured out why certain hairstyles never worked for me. My technique wasn’t wrong; instead it was that my hair and hair ties were not compatible. Through the repetition of doing my hair, I realized that what I see online is not true. When a person looks at an idea online, the person in the video makes it look like the idea is easy but it's not until you try it on yourself you realize how hard it is.
Looking back on it, the women creating the hairstyles in those videos had really smooth silky hair while I have frizzy hair and flyaways. It wasn’t until after I experienced the pain of the rubber hair ties did I gain the knowledge of how some items don't work the same for all. Personal experience like my experience of the hair ties help us know about an idea more and learn how to fix it. The knowledge we gain from personal experience doesn't just have to be about what we can and can’t do, it can also be the way we try to fix an issue.
This idea can be applied to many ideas, one being in biology in which personal experience will help justify one's idea to a result. Once I figured out the problem with the hair ties not working I tried tying the hair ties less tightly and made the hairstyle looser and it ended up working for the better. Due to this personal experience, I learned what was the reason behind it and how to make it better.
Object 2: Cake pop maker
A year ago my house flooded and during this time I couldn't participate in many activities. A hobby of mine was to bake but during this time I couldn't because we didn’t have the correct equipment. Later, I found our cake pop maker and tried to make cake pops. I didn't watch any videos on the usage of the machine. After the first batch was made, I noticed that the cake was so soft that it would just slip off the stick or the cake would absorb the chocolate, instead of creating an outer layer.
After the failure I watched multiple youtube videos and learnt that a regular cake pop is not made with a machine. A couple weeks ago I tried the original method to make cake pops, and it took a while as well as many ingredients and equipment. Even when knowing the correct method, mistakes were made on proportions and decoration. Through this experience I learned that there is no easy way to complete a task.
In this case it was the idea that using a cake pop maker could help me create cake pops. This experience also taught me that even going the easy way could be a failure. This idea justifies the trial and error system that is needed in natural sciences as well as human sciences. When I created actual cake pops, they were too sweet and the chocolate covering was really messy. I also learned that baking, or any task in general, should not be rushed because the results will end in disaster.
Object 3: Moonstone Jewelers Business Cards
These business cards were created by me for my small jewelry business. When I first created my small business, I didn't create any business cards and just promoted my business through social media. After 2 months, I realized that these techniques were not helping and I barely got any orders. I watched multiple videos on youtube and tik tok on the creation of a small business and researched how to be successful. I even closed my shop for a while to renovate my products, my pictures and ways of reaching the audience, but in the end I was still unsuccessful.
It wasn't until I came across a video which stressed the importance of having a business card and the effects of it. During this period of time I was willing to try anything, so I created a business card and worked on the presentation of information. I started handing out my business cards to friends and family and packed them into all of my orders. This helped orders to start rolling in due to customers giving my business cards to other friends and family members. I also started carrying my business cards along with me in case anyone asks where I get my jewelry. This resulted in orders coming in because many people remembered my business after they received my card.
In the end through this experience I learned that for something to succeed you need to work hard. This can also be said about history and the sciences in which to explain and justify a topic one has to work hard to get results. When I noticed my small business wasn’t getting orders, I started changing the ways I promote my items and did more research. I also started from the bottom to rise up to where I am now. Through this experience I learned that when customers had a tangible item, such as a business card, it helped them remember to check out my business.
