What is the relationship between personal experience and knowledge?
Bruce
My grandparent’s dog Bruce is the first dog in my family. Before that my grandparents were strictly against keeping a pet because they thought that pets were dirty. But when my uncle left for Australia, my grandparents were forced to take care of his dog. Thankfully, my grandparents have come to love Bruce’s company over the years due to his cheerful and caring personality.
So, this is an example of how the personal experience of a person affects the type of outlook they have on subjects, which affects their acquisition of knowledge. The emotion behind a certain experience influences the type of attitude a person has towards knowledge or the perspective a person builds in their life. In the case of my grandparents, their good experience with Bruce has motivated them to love dogs and welcome any knowledge on how to take good care of a dog.
Similarly, many people may refuse to do something if they have had bad experiences that result in them having a fear of that kind of knowledge. This development of emotions related to certain instances makes a lifelong impact on a person’s acquisition of knowledge and their interests. And this relationship works in the reverse as well because our knowledge can affect our personal experiences. For example, if I learn about the working of a plane in a class and that inspires me then that can inspire me to become a pilot. Here my knowledge of a plane motivates me to have the experience of flying a plane.
I think many of the decisions I take today are influenced by my values that are a result of my personal experiences. These values are knowledge to me that I gain from day to day life because it lets me guard myself against any wrongdoing and leads me in the path that is right for me. So the relationship between personal experiences and knowledge is very relevant in everyday life.
My travels to remote places
My family and I have always gone to places with lots of nature walks and historical sites for vacation and that has greatly affected my preferences of vacation places and interests. I love to hike, go to wildlife sanctuaries, visit national parks and go to historical sites instead of visiting a city with a large population. The exhilaration I have felt in my vacations has affected my personality and my interests as I have a great interest in medieval history. This depicts that personal experiences of a person have a great influence on the decisions he/she takes in life.
The decisions taken by a person have an impact on his future which shape the type of experiences he will have. More than that, the environment and the kind of people a person is surrounded by, create the experiences. For example, in my case all the members of my family are nature lovers, so that has impacted my vacation preferences. The preferences of other people have had a great impact on my likes and dislikes. Others opinions formed my perceptions of the world and my ability to interpret and communicate knowledge to my peers. In a more broader sense every piece of knowledge can be justified through the personal experiences of a person.
Therefore, opinions are formed on the basis of experiences, which in turn build the interests of a person and their ability to acquire knowledge. The relationship between interests and knowledge is different for everyone as people have very diverging opinions on the same subject. The only thing common is that emotions are tied to everything a human seeks to do and wants to achieve in his or her future. It is not necessary to find luxury in the knowledge seeked because at the end of the day if a person is comfortable with knowledge then that subject becomes interesting and comforting.
My badminton racket
Throughout my life, I have been put into sports like skating, tennis and basketball but my favorite sport is badminton. This red racket is one of my first rackets that my father got for me, so I formed a close relationship with it. Like the relationship with a racket, a person's relationship with the environment is also very important to the development of knowledge.
It is common understanding that the atmosphere of a place or relationship has a huge impact on personal experiences because one’s interpretation of things is dependent on the aura emitted by a scene. If there is a negative environment around an individual, then it is more likely that there are negative thoughts and interpretations being produced. But at the same time if a place emits a positive vibe, then a positive mindset will be developed. This idea is very relevant to my life because due to the positive feedback I got for my play in badminton, I was motivated to play better.
So, the relationship between personal experiences and knowledge doesn’t only go one way, knowledge can also influence personal experiences. If a person gains an understanding of a particular topic and that arises a curiosity within them then that might influence a person into participating in their interests enhancing their knowledge and strengthening their interest in the particular topic. For example, in my case, when I started to go for badminton coaching, I convinced my parents to get me a racket set in order to improve my game.Through the example of my racket, it is evident that personal experience creates emotional connect to knowledge
The relation between personal experiences and knowledge is very relevant to today’s world where we have the freedom to decide our own paths to the individualistic turnout of the world as countries and cultures are accepting industrialisation.
