What is the relationship between personal experience and knowledge?
The TOK prompt I have selected is: "What is the relationship between personal experience and knowledge?" It can be argued that Knowledge is derived from Personal experience. Personal experience helps us learn more about different phenomena in the world, and this leads to human curiosity, leading to the discovery of new knowledge. Personal experience serves as the instigator for the discovery of new knowledge, and while it is not directly thought to be a part of the scientific method, it is the prerequisite for the discovery of knowledge and the implementation of the scientific method.
This is the teddy bear that I got from the hospital after my removal of tonsils surgery. It was meant to be a reminder of my successful medical operation, as well as a reward of getting through the ordeal. This object links to the idea that personal experience is the instigator of knowledge because it represents a symbol of a personal experience that I went through. Additionally, by undergoing this personal experience, I was able to learn new medical knowledge about the surgery they performed, as well as learn more knowledge regarding the procedures in which a surgery was performed.
When I was in 4th grade, I was able to explore how my experience in the hospital and during the surgery influenced and impacted my knowledge about medical processes and the impact on health. This allowed me to utilize this information in the future, as well as use it to view situations in different perspectives. I was able to learn more about different fields of medical research and medicine, and It ignited a curiosity and passion for medical related fields and topics.
Overall, I became more aware of my health, leading to increased knowledge resulting from personal experience. This object relates to the core/optional theme of knowledge and technology because the medical field is exponentially growing due to the technological advancements which enhance the depth of medical knowledge. This object was included in the exhibition because it demonstrates the idea that even the most complex of knowledge must be instigated by an idea, which often comes from personal experience, whether it is a memory, or a current action taking place that triggers curiosity.
The second object is my seventh grade math Carnegie book. It was the product of my studies of math as a seventh grader, and it is the only possession that I still have that serves as proof of the knowledge gained during this experience. This textbook is used by several teachers and students around the state in order to teach mathematics. The textbook is also useful because the company offers interactive lessons and other activities in order to enhance the personal experience students have with the textbook and the content, which broadens their knowledge. The object links to the idea that personal experience has a strong connection to knowledge because it shows how the knowledge that I learned from the book was an effect of the experience that I gained from me taking the seventh grade math class. Without that personal experience, I would not have gained the knowledge from the textbook.
The personal experience contributed to increased knowledge about the subject, as well as study habits. This object relates to the core/optional theme of knowledge and language, because the text book is a form of language that is used to communicate important ideas and information. Additionally, this object connects to the key concept of explanation, and interpretation. The textbook represents explanation because it offers an explanation of knowledge and facts for users to interpret into their own knowledge. This textbook helped me link several ideas into a coherent understanding of the subject, and it was a valuable personal experience. This object was included in the exhibition because it was a symbol of critical knowledge I gained from personal experience, and how personal experience can also revive knowledge from the past.
The third object is my Epson Printer. My Epson printer is a personal device that I use to scan documents, print out materials for educational purposes, as well as influence the way in which I absorb and learn knowledge. This object has helped me learn because it helps me gain understanding using physical learning materials, which I find more useful when understanding and absorbing knowledge. Additionally, several people find that using paper when learning helps them grasp the concept and material faster.
This is a frequently used tool that has helped me gain the knowledge of how to insert a printer cartridge, as well as how to troubleshoot basic technological malfunctions. The personal experience that I have gained, such as solving malfunctions with the printer, have directly related and correlated to my increased knowledge of how to solve basic hardware issues. The object was included in the exhibition because it gives an example of a personal experience that has increased awareness of a specific type of knowledge that has several real-world applications and uses.
