What is the relationship between personal experience and knowledge?
Object 1: Drivers License
My first object is my drivers license. This license is something I got in February 2022 after passing my drivers test. Typically a drivers license is representative of one’s driving knowledge, determined through a single test. Although this test evaluates a variety of driving skills, there are many things that cannot be scored. These things, such as reacting to unfamiliar situations or areas, can only be learned through personal experience. In this instance, personal experience driving after getting your license is what is necessary in order to gain new knowledge about driving.
A driver's license shows the relationship between personal experience and knowledge as it shows how personal experience allows for growth of knowledge. The license opens up a door for me to go out and gain personal experience in order to grow my knowledge. Although knowledge is necessary in order to initially get the license, this knowledge is not complete, and leaves a great room for growth. This growth is to be achieved through personal experience, as that allows for you to see what you are doing in a real world situation, and to apply the knowledge you have, which helps you gain new knowledge. For example, for the driver’s test you learn simple skills such as lane changes and parking; however, personal experience allows you to apply the knowledge you gained and use it in unexpected situations such as when there is traffic. Although I knew how to drive since I got my drivers license, the personal experience I have gained by truly doing it every day to school since then has helped me grow and gain knowledge. The driver’s license shows the relationship between personal experience and knowledge by showing how personal experience helps with the creation of new knowledge and how without personal experience knowledge would be limited, and inapplicable.
Object 2: Practice SAT Score
My second object is my Practice SAT Score, from when I was preparing before taking my first SAT test in December 2021. This score shows the relationship between personal experience and knowledge because it represents how no matter the knowledge you have, personal experience differs from what you expect. On my practice scores I got scores that satisfied me, ranging from 1400-1500. However, when I got to the actual exam I found that getting those scores were not so easy.
In this case personal experience created a relationship with knowledge by presenting missing knowledge that allows me to go back and attempt to gain knowledge. Initially the practice scores created a false sense of satisfaction for the knowledge I have and made me feel prepared for the actual SAT. After the personal experience of taking the SAT, I was able to grow my knowledge by going back and preparing for information I might have skipped over the first time. Henceforth, this shows how personal experience allows for growth of knowledge by showing you the real life situation and leading you to have to handle unexpected situations. In this case, the score I got on my actual SAT being lower than what I expected based on my knowledge from the practice SATs was an unexpected situation that I needed to handle after having personal experience, and that allowed for growth of my knowledge. The Practice SAT Score therefore shows the relationship between personal experience and knowledge as it shows how knowledge can be limited prior to personal experience, and how personal experience is necessary in order for knowledge to grow.
Object 3: Ice Skates
My third object is my ice skates that I got around 4 years ago. These skates mean a lot to me as I got them after a lot of hard work making it up the levels of ice skating and getting to one of the highest levels. They allowed me to further pursue my passion in ice skating beyond just lessons and be able to skate when I wanted to beyond just lessons. Ice skates represent the relationship between knowledge and personal experience as they show how personal experience can allow for growth of knowledge.
Before having skates of my own I used to have to rent skates from the ice rink in order to take lessons. These skates were of minimal quality and limited my ability to skate and gain new knowledge. Although these skates allowed me to gain knowledge in lessons, they did not allow for much growth. Getting my own pair of skates allowed me to have more personal experience as I was able to practice outside of just lessons. This permitted me to grow my knowledge and practice my skills. Additionally it also allowed me to gain new knowledge through practice as I could deal with new situations and try different things, beyond simply what I learned in lessons. Having my own skates in comparison to the rental ones allowed me to gain the personal experience and practice necessary for me to be able to excel and grow my knowledge. This shows the relationship between personal experience and knowledge as it shows that personal experience is necessary to expand knowledge.
