Why do we seek knowledge?
Flat Earth Model
The flat-earth model helps us to answer the question, why do we seek knowledge, by providing an example of how knowledge can be used to prove or disprove a theory. The flat-earth model is used to justify the flat-earth theory which says the earth is flat, not round. The flat-earth community continues to deny the consensus that the earth is round because of the veri similarity of the model. Because this model is semi-realistic, people wholeheartedly believe it and accept it as fact, especially when there is mutual doubt of official claims by institutions such as the government.
This doubt eventually leads to people accepting false theories as fact, even when they have been proved incorrect multiple times over. This allows people leading the conspiracy theory to gain power over thousands of people all loyal to the cause because of their mutual distrust.
Thus, people will often try to gain more knowledge of the world to “prove” the theory correct and become more powerful. The flat-earth model is an obvious example of this happening. The influential people in the flat-earth community created the flat-earth model to emulate real life cycles such as the phases of the moon and the day and night cycle. These people sought knowledge, not to candidly present the evidence to their audience, but to further their doubt and distrust in public institutions, thereby solidifying their power. These people seek knowledge in order to convince others of their theory.
This way of seeking knowledge, to convince others, also applies in the opposite direction. When educated people see conspiracy theories such as the flat-earth theory gaining popularity among the public, they will often try to prove the theory wrong. These people will seek knowledge on the subject in order to find discrepancies in false models such as the flat-earth model. Because they are educated on the subject through this seeking of knowledge, they increase their chance to convince others through scientific reasoning. Therefore, the flat-earth model compels people to seek knowledge to either prove or disprove a theory.
Trumpet
Another object that answers the question, why do we seek knowledge, is my trumpet. I have played the trumpet for 6 years. I have sought knowledge about how the trumpet functions, how it should sound, and through lessons by many experienced teachers. I have put a lot of work and effort into developing my talent as a trumpet player. The knowledge I’ve gained helps to develop me as a musician and helps to better myself.
As I increase my knowledge of the trumpet, my confidence and self-esteem also increase. It feels good to know how to play the trumpet, and when I play it well, it inspires me to learn more. Additionally, more knowledge about the trumpet contributes to experiencing a higher success rate as a musician. Therefore, more knowledge about the trumpet makes for a better player.
Many people become musicians because they want to spread their musical knowledge to the world. This is also the reason I became a musician. Through gaining knowledge about the trumpet, how to play it properly, and hours of practice, I have improved my playing and performance skills. One reason I continue to seek knowledge about my trumpet is to present my ability and musical talent to others. I enjoy playing music for other people because it demonstrates my hard work and knowledge, and it also allows others to enjoy my skill and hard work as well. Within the arts, people seek knowledge to gain attention and compliments from others too. Many artists gain knowledge to gain power within the music community as well.
I-Pad
The last object that explains why we seek knowledge is my Apple I-Pad. The I-Pad is very useful in my life because it’s the main device I use to gather information. Whenever I have a question or need updates on the state of the world, I use this device along with the internet to obtain knowledge. People seek knowledge to educate themselves on current events and various topics due to human curiosity and a fear of ignorance.
My I-Pad, when connected to the internet, is my gateway to the outside world. Its availability and accessibility provides an easy way for me and others around the world to find any information needed. Because the internet has made information so accessible, the effort and time it takes to secure this knowledge has become much less. In addition, this device has vast resources available that allow me to fully understand any subject because I can seek knowledge from multiple websites and satisfy my innate curiosity.
My I-Pad also allows me to seek necessary knowledge required in today’s society. One must be educated in order to succeed and not be viewed as ignorant. The emphasis on literacy and knowledge has highlighted the need for fast, reliable resources, and the Ipad connected to the internet has stepped up to fill the role. As the world becomes more polarized and more radical, the demand to educate oneself on the current events around the world becomes essential.
My I-Pad along with the internet is the way I fulfill this need for information ever present in our competitive world.
