When I was a child, I spent about five years as a YMCA scout in Lystrup, Denmark. Those years in this youth movement filled me with lasting memories of learning to live in and with nature - walking through quiet forests, cooking over open fires, and falling asleep beneath a sky full of stars. I still remember the feeling of washing dishes in cold water after outdoor meals, and how simple tasks like that taught patience and teamwork. Being a scout gave me a deep appreciation for the outdoors and a sense of belonging in nature’s rhythm. It offered a meaningful balance to my education at Elsted School where most learning happened indoors. Looking back, those experiences shaped not only how I value nature but also how I understand collaboration, responsibility, and learning beyond the classroom.
As scouts, we often went on long hikes, carrying our backpacks through the countryside. Those journeys did more than strengthen our bodies - they deepened our appreciation for nature and the simple rhythm of healthy living. Walking side by side taught us about teamwork, patience, and the value of staying connected through shared effort and conversation. Sometimes we sang as we walked, our voices blending with the sounds of wind and footsteps on the path. The singing brought a lightness to the journey and strengthened our sense of belonging. I still remember those moments with joy. They remind me how movement, music, and nature can come together to create lasting bonds and happiness.
The five inspiring scouting years in my childhood laid a great foundation in my life. How? As I grew older, I experienced that the years as a scout proved invaluable in developing competencies as a business scout, where identifying opportunities and navigating changes mirrored the exploratory spirit of finding my way through forests. The ability I learned as YMCA scout to adapt to challenges translate quite well, I think, to spotting market trends and driving strategic innovation in professional settings. Today, my early scouting experiences continue to inform a regenerative approach to business development, emphasizing collaboration and respect for surroundings in pursuit of meaningful growth.
