When I was a child, I spent about five years as a YMCA scout in Lystrup, Denmark. Those years left lasting memories of learning to live in and with nature - moving through forests, cooking over open fires, and sleeping under the stars. I remember well learning how to prepare food outdoors and clean up afterward using cold water. Spending much time outdoors as a scout offered a valuable balance to my education at Elsted School where most learning took place in indoor classrooms.
As scouts, I recall that we often went hiking - carrying our backpacks through the countryside. Those hikes not only strengthened the body. They also nurtured an appreciation for nature and healthy living. Walking together helped us learn about teamwork, patience, and communication - skills that have remained relevant ever since. Sometimes we sang while hiking. I recall that the singing brought a sense of joy and also helped us connect as a group. I remember those moments with joy.
