Participating in Human Library events has deeply strengthened my skills as a mental health coach - especially the ability to ask thoughtful, open-ended questions that encourage meaningful conversation and personal reflection. At each of the events I have taken part in, a person has shared her or his real-life story. Also, each event provided a safe space for honest dialogue about topics such as identity, trauma, and resilience. Asking questions and listening with genuine curiosity and care helped create meaningful exchanges from which everyone learned. These experiences enhanced my knowledge in helping to guide people toward greater self-awareness and growth. Through these conversations, In every conversation, I discovered how essential good questioning is to any coaching relationship. Asking the right kind of question helps people uncover what they truly feel and value, and it opens the path toward new perspectives and healing. Key competencies that grew stronger through these experiences include:
Asking open-ended questions that invite the sharing of emotions, beliefs, and needs.
Facilitating safe and respectful conversations about sensitive or painful experiences.
Strengthening cultural awareness and inclusion through genuine, identity-centered dialogue.
Reflecting on these encounters, I learned that human connection flourishes when people feel safe to share their stories - and when listeners meet those stories with humility and care. Each person’s story carries insight, and every authentic question can open a door to understanding, resilience, and shared humanity.
Below are examples of Human Library events I have contributed to.
During one event, questions to “C” opened a conversation about living with a cleft lip and palate. The dialogue brought forward honest reflections about social stigma, confidence, and everyday health challenges.
In another exchange, “R” shared experiences about living as a transgender person. Communicating about emotional strength and identity encouraged participants to listen without judgment, and to learn about what living authentically can mean.
A conversation with “S” about polyamorous relationships offered valuable insights into what love means to different people, and how people communicate, build trust, and respect each other’s choices in different relationship structures. “S” shared how openness, honesty, and clear boundaries are essential for maintaining harmony among partners.
In another conversation, “J” shared what it was like to make the painful decision to give a child up for adoption. The dialogue deepened awareness of attachment, loss, and the lifelong search for belonging.
A conversation with “L”, who had survived abuse, centered on healing, self-worth, and re-establishing a sense of safety.
In a separate dialogue, “B”, a survivor of suicide, spoke about recovery, hope, and the importance of supportive communities.
