Update from the Principal's Desk:
SFMS families- In order for us to Embrace*Empower*Educate our students, we need to get to know them and know their school needs. Over the course of the next three weeks, we will begin meeting with groups of students who will serve on Principal's Student Advisory. Students that have been nominated will eat lunch with me and a member of my admin team once a quarter to discuss what they most value, what changes they would like to see, and areas of school improvement. As important as it is to hear our students' voices, it is also important to hear from the parents. Parents, please complete this brief six question survey to help us get to know your priorities and communication preferences. We worked hard to eliminate regular parent portal messages based on parent feedback three years ago, and we want to make sure we are on track.
This week Ms. Calloway put together the SFMS Club Fair, and students were able to browse the different clubs that we offer. The School Store also opened this week, and our students love it! In the coming weeks, school may be getting harder. You may see your child having to study more often than in the past. Remind them to sign up for FLEX sessions and ask them what FLEX sessions they signed up for each day! Teachers are working to offer more brain break FLEX sessions in addition to remediation and enrichment.
Thank you for your continued support.

We are learning additional narrative elements as we move through Unit 1. We will be studying the plot line map, as well as character types, and how authors develop their characters through characterization. We will be studying these elements through a variety of multimedia sources and through analysis of a short story. Students are continuing to develop their story snippets centering on a moment from childhood. They will focus on enhancing the plot and characters of their story for the next two weeks. Students will be having a cold read formative over plot and characterization on Friday, September 1st.
On Level Math
Students had their third quiz on plotting ordered pairs and finding reflections on coordinate plane this week. For our first unit, students have explored interpreting integers, absolute value, comparing and ordering rational numbers, plotting ordered pairs, and finding reflections.
Next week, students will find distance on coordinate grids and review for the unit test. Our Unit 1 Summative Test is scheduled for Thursday, August 31st. We will then start our journey of Unit 2 on Number System Fluency. Study guides and other helpful resources are available on Canvas. If your child needs extra help with math, remind him/her to sign up for weekly help sessions with Mrs. Tan and Mrs. Bridges.

We will also practice reflecting points across the x and y-axes in addition to calculating the distance between two points. Our summative exam is scheduled for August 30 and your child already has their study guide. If they lose their study guide, a digital version can be found in Canvas.
Our next unit is in Integer Computation.
This week we will be learning about inertia and gravity. The students will conduct some experiments to determine what their weight would be on different planets as well as how far they can jump in different parts of our solar system. We will also do an experiment to understand inertia using marbles. In addition, we will be learning about comets, meteors, and asteroids.
Joke for the week: I have a new theory on inertia, but it doesn't seem to be gaining any momentum.

Happy Friday, Eagle Families! It’s been a great start to the school year so far. Thank you for your continued support as our students adjust to middle school. Life gets busy, especially with the start of a new school year, and it can be easy to get in a routine, but don’t forget to spend uninterrupted time together as a family. Opening dialogue and creating connection within the home is important for our students growth and success. Facilitate conversation in your home by asking open ended questions, like asking them to tell you about their favorite part of middle school and how it might be difficult so far. Students can request an appointment with their counselor by logging onto the SFM Student Info Canvas Course and clicking on “SFM Counseling”. Thank you again for all your support, and please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Have a great weekend!
