Update from the Principal's desk:
Parents and Guardians,
We are shortly approaching winter break, and many of us are celebrating holidays during this season. Please enjoy this time with your kids. Middle school years pass quickly, and before you know it, you have a young adult in your house! Cherish your time with this quirky, fun, and sometimes dramatic age!
When we return in January, we will tell the students to hit the reset button. Go into the new year with a positive attitude, build strong work habits, and commit to yourself. Please continue to let us know what we can do to support your student and/or students as a whole. Please fill out this general feedback form to let us know ways that we can best serve you. If we see trends in the feedback, I will share it with PTO and LSC to make the appropriate changes!

Have a wonderful holiday break!

This week in Social Studies:
We finished our Europe Government & Economics Unit and spent time reviewing and preparing for our Social Studies Midterm.
We will end our study of the European region next week with various cultural enrichment activities for students.
Reminder: Please be sure that you have sent your child's JA Field Trip Permission Form to their teacher signed and filled out on BOTH sides before our Winter Break for the field trip in February.
Looking ahead: We will begin a new unit on Personal Finance and JA preparation when we return in January.
The 6th Grade Social Studies team wishes our students and families a very Merry and Restful Winter Break and a Happy New Year!
We are so proud of the progress your student has made this year in 6th grade. We can’t wait to see how much further they grow the rest of the year. We will be doing a binder clean out to prepare for the second semester. Please take a moment to check the state of your student’s binders. Many of them are falling apart and/or the rings are broken. If you have a chance, please consider replacing any broken or worn-out binders so your student will have the supplies they need to be successful for the rest of the year.
This week Enrichment is working on a final study project. This project will be the midterm grade for our class. Students will choose to make a study project for two of their other classes. The project will be completed in class and is due on Friday 12/15/23.
Upcoming Dates:
Friday 12/15 – Midterm project due
Friday 12/15 – Last day to turn in missing work
PE:
The students will clean out their pe lockers and turn in their locks before the holiday break. We do a locker clean out to start fresh in the new year. All belongings in your child’s locker should be brought home, even if your child has weight training all year long. Anything left behind will be held for a short time and if not picked up in January, we will send it to goodwill.
Athletics: Information on golf and track tryouts for the 2024 season will be posted on the athletics web page in January. A current physical are required to tryout. We have basketball games on January 4, 10, & 11. The county tournaments are January 16-20 for 7th grade and January 23-27 for 8th grade.
Healthcare Science(after winter break):
6th grade will be learning about the CTAE's student led organization HOSA through a scavenger hunt.
7th grade is focusing on CTAE's student led organization HOSA through a competitive event research project.
8th Grade will create a personal leadership plan to participate in a CTAE student led organization like HOSA through their programs, conferences, community service and competitive events on the local, region, state, and national level as they move into high school.
HOSA's chapter meetings will be held on Thursday January 4, 2024 for 8th Grade and January 18, 2024 for 7th and 6th Grade. SLC qualification for those already signed up to participate will take place January 10-18th. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Kauffman at f22003@forsyth.k12.ga.us

Hi everyone! What a great semester it has been at South Middle. We have learned a lot and done many awesome things, and I know the spring semester will be just as great. Our students have really been working hard this semester as they figure out middle school and become more independent. With our upcoming break on the horizon, be sure to brainstorm with them ways to spend uninterrupted time together. While the holidays can be a super busy time of year, it’s also a great opportunity to make time together a priority by scheduling out one day or one night to reconnect and do something special together. You can find a list of various activities in Atlanta available for the whole family here. I am so grateful for all the time I get to spend with your students. I have really enjoyed getting to know them, and I look forward to seeing everyone again in the new year! I wish you a happy holiday season and a very happy new year!
