In the 2019-20 school year FMPSD offered First Nations, Metis and Inuit Professional Learning for our ATA staff. Here teachers had the opportunity to deepen their foundational knowledge on Indigenous culture, history and traditions. With partnerships with the Athabasca Tribal Council, Metis Local 1935 and the Nistawoyou Friendship Center along with guest speakers from across the province, teachers were immersed deep into learning Indigenous ways of life.
Our PLF sessions included in depth teachings of Indigenous beading (particularly Peyote (with the ATC) and Metis flower beading with the talented Metis Flower Beader and Knowledge Keeper, Connie Kulhavy). We also took a land-based learning walk along the Athabasca Trail at MacDonald Island with Knowledge Keeper, Clair Antoine, from the Nistawoyou Friendship Center. We also had a wondeful session learning about Metis culture with the Metis Local 1935 and gained a deeper understanding of our Metis people of Fort McMurray.
On December 13th, 2019, FMPSD offered a full day learning Friday to our staff across the division which was a day completely infused with Indigenous teachings from Metis Jigging, beading and history, Powwow teachings, soapstone carving, land-based learning, fish scale art, and so much more!
