Indigenous Grade 7 students from FMPSD, FMCSD and Fort McKay participated in the first annual Wellness conference at Shell Place, organized by FMPSD and FMCSD. A variety of topics related to medicine wheel teachings was offered and students chose three sessions to attend. Overall about 120 students and 25 Elders and Knowledge Keepers were involved.

A committee of First Nations, Metis and Inuit School liaisons organized a week long Games camp where each Elementary school could send a group of Gr. 4-6 students to lean some Indigenous games. It was a hit and students enjoyed learning new games!
Heritage Village

For the week of March 9-12, 2020 on our Open Minds Heritage School focused primarily on the Indigenous Culture and Traditions. We were honored to have a number of Indigenous speakers who taught the students a variety of topics. Our students learned about: traditional indigenous beading and made a flower on felt with Treasure Cooper; trapping with Wendy MacMillian; Jingle Dancing with Victoria Martin who taught us how to jingle dance and about her jingle dress and accessories; Indigenous medicines that are in our region and their uses from Youth Coordinator and Knowledge Keeper, Claire Antione; Fish Scale art; storytelling and talking sticks with Maralyn Pholmeir from the Wood Buffalo Regional Library; Cultural Navigation with Pollyanna McBain; Heritage Village Indigenous artifacts and their uses; Metis culture and history with artist and Knowledge Keeper, Connie Kulhavy who taught how to paint birch trees. It was a rich experience for both students and staff.

This year we are excited for the potential to offer unique classes to our students at Ecole McTavish High School will be having an Indigenous Art class, and Native Studies for interested students.

We also offer The 4th R Uniting our Nations as a peer mentoring program for all of our Junior High classes across the Division.
