I created the Flourishment brand with a tree symbolising the Tree of Life, representing spirituality, healing, growth, and transformation—values that are deeply important to me.
To me, Flourishment is about achieving a state of balance. It is when we feel like our absolute best selves, radiating vitality and a natural glow from within.
In order to flourish, our mind, body, and spirit require nourishment. Much like a tree requires strong roots to grow, the F in Flourishment represents the foundations—the meaningful and sustainable changes that set you on the path to healing. By nourishing the mind, body, and soul, we can create strong foundations for optimised health and wellbeing.
Everyone is unique, so my approach is never the same, but I believe there are ten core foundations essential for achieving optimal health and lifestyle transformation. Kelly A. Turner, an end-of-life Psychotherapist, spent over 15 years researching more than 1,500 individuals who experienced remission from terminal illnesses. She identified key similarities in what these individuals did on their journey back to health. I have personally witnessed amazing transformations in my own health and in others when incorporating these core principles that nourish the mind, body, and soul.
Kelly A. Turner’s Radical Remissions documentary series, Healing Against All Odds, explores the journeys of seven individuals who achieved remission from serious diseases by incorporating 10 common factors (Radically changing your diet; Taking control of your health; Following your intuition; Using herbs and supplements; Releasing suppressed emotions; Increasing positive emotions; Embracing social support; Deepening spiritual connection; Having strong reasons for living; strengthening your immune system). I first watched this inspiring series in 2014, at the beginning of my journey into the wonders of natural health. After the sudden passing of my late ex-father-in-law from lung cancer just the year before, watching the series became another driving force in my decision to change careers.
It was during my time at The College of Naturopathic Medicine that I learned about Dan Buettner, who discovered the Blue Zones in 2004. He identified five key areas where people live significantly longer and healthier lives:
1. Sardinia, Italy
2. Okinawa, Japan
3. Nicoya, Costa Rica
4. Icaria, Greece
5. Loma Linda, California
As my research developed, I found that the Ten Foundations of Flourishment were also intrinsically linked to living a long and healthy life. This connection is evident in the lifestyles of centenarians living in regions known as Blue Zones, where these principles are embedded into daily life.
While these are the most well-known Blue Zones, I believe there are others. Since moving to Egypt, I have been fortunate to visit St. Catherine’s Mountain multiple times, where I’ve heard about Bedouins (the local Sinai tribe) who live well into their hundreds.
On one trip, I had the honour of meeting Hagag Ameria, a Bedouin woman believed to be in her mid-90s. Living deep in the mountains of St. Catherine, she is still remarkably active, tending to several gardens near her home. Despite her dislike for cooking—she’ll happily let you make dinner in exchange for her hospitality—Hagag Ameria is a true inspiration.
Her eyes have an incredible depth, as though you can see straight into her soul. Although my Arabic is basic, with the help of friends, I learned about her goats, the wild dogs threatening them, and her philosophy for a happy life. Her solution was simple yet profound: connect with nature as much as possible and become self-sufficient by living off the land. Having remained in the mountains for over 20 years, Hagag Ameria is content in her self-imposed retreat, tending to her “secret garden.” She is, to me, the embodiment of Flourishment.
The Radical Remissions series and The Blue Zones research inspired me to create the Ten Foundations of Flourishment, which you can read more about in my blog post, Foundations to Flourishment. You can also watch the first episode of Radical Remissions on YouTube which below.
The T in Flourishment represents transformation, symbolised by a tree standing tall and full of life, blossoming with growth. Much like trees and plants undergo transformations with each season, our lives evolve with new challenges and goals. However, we never start from scratch. Instead, we carry forward the knowledge, experiences, and resilience gained from previous seasons.
I help my clients transition into these new phases of life, working with them to build new routines, habits, and a wealth of knowledge that sets the stage for lasting transformation through the Foundations.
