Student Leadership

Orchestra Officers

Leadership in Orchestra is as important as any structured organization.  Football teams would have their captains and the Quarterback being one of them.  The CEO of a company would be assisted by their officers.  The Troy High School Orchestra also has an heirachy that helps with the running of the music program.  The Concert Master and Orchestra President can work in tandem to make a trip to a music festival more efficient, for example.

Concert Master

The concert master is the visible student head of the orchestras.  This person should have the skill sets to not only tune an orchestra but to rehearse the orchestra.  Their skill level must be higher than the average musician in the orchestra.

Section Leaders

These persons assist in the teaching and rehearsing of the ensemble. Through example and active

exchange, they set the standard for each section. Section Leaders run sectionals and help with other tasks in the

operation of the program.

President

The President should be a senior, must have prior Council experience, and is elected annually in May by

the Orchestra. The President presides over business meetings concerning the Orchestra and the Council. Also, he/she represents the students at TEMPO meetings. He/she is the first assistant in

charge under the Director at all non-marching functions and trips made by the Orchestra.


Vice-President

The Vice-President should be a senior or junior and serves in the absence of the President. He/She

serves as Chairperson of the Social Committee. Social Activities include the Potluck, Holiday Party, and

Banquet.


Secretary

The Secretary should have at least one year’s experience in Orchestra. He/She takes minutes at all

Council meetings and assists the Director with office work. The Secretary is also responsible for checking the

roll at rehearsals and performances.


Ways and Means

This person should have at least one year’s experience in Orchestra. The WM person works

with the Director in matters concerning the financial status of the Program and is responsible for helping

organize student fundraisers with the Fundraiser Chairpersons. He/she is to also be in communication with

TEMPO’s Treasurer and Fundraiser offices.


Historian

This person should have at least one year of Orchestra experience. They are nominated by

the Council and then appointed by the Director. The Historian works closely with TEMPO and the Council to provide students and parents with information regarding the Instrumental Music Program. He/She

creates and edits a newsletter that is sent out to parents and students once a month. A video production is made

of the school year and presented at the end of the banquet.


Librarian and Library Crew

The Director and the Council Board appoints the Librarian after the submission of applications by

students who are interested. They supervise and manage all library operations including distribution, collection,

and cataloging of all band music. Duties also include keeping the library clean, repairing music, and passing

out music. The Librarian may also select a crew to assist in the organizing of the library.

Band Officers


The Leadership Council is composed of band, color guard, and orchestra officers. This group consists

of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Ways and Means, Librarian, Equipment Manager, Historian, Drum

Major, Assistant Drum Majors, and Class Representatives. Only the board members are to attend weekly

meetings. Others are to report to their designated board members for information and assignments. The Board

consists of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor, Drum Major, Assistant Drum

Major, and Class Representatives.


President

Uniform Crew Manager and Crew

This position is appointed by the Director and Council board members. Uniforms and uniform issues

are to be handled by this group. This includes organizing, distributing, and collecting uniforms.


Equipment Manager and Crew

The Director and the Council Board appoints the equipment manager after submission of application by

students who are interested. The Equipment Manager then selects a crew to handle the loading and unloading of

instruments and equipment. He/She also supervises set-up and takedown of equipment during all rehearsals.


Drum Major

This person should be a senior or junior, have been in Band for at least one year, and is selected through

audition by the Director and a panel of judges. The Drum Major must display strong leadership and

motivational qualities. He/She is in charge of the ensemble at all marching functions. Presentation and

confidence is important.


Assistant Drum Major

This individual must have been in the band for one year and be a senior, junior, or sophomore. They are

selected by audition by a panel of judges. They assist the Drum Major and is in charge of the group in the

absence of both the Drum Major and the Director.
