Louisburg Magnet High School
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
The "Magnet High School" means that we can draw students from anywhere in the county to focus on our STEM centered curriculum. At this time the majority of our course offerings are the same or similar, for the most part, to what is being offered at the other traditional high schools, however, our classes are all taught with a STEM focused Project Based Learning (PBL) curriculum. As our program grows, we plan to add more diverse and unique course opportunities.
In addition to the general STEM focused Project Based Learning (PBL) in all of our courses, our students are all offered the opportunity to apply to participate in a more concentrated and rigorous STEM Academy that starts in the 9th grade that incorporates a focused and collaborative STEM curriculum into their Core and Elective classes that will also have the students participating in team based competitions called STEM Mini and Grand challenges. All students get a taste of this style of more concentrated STEM learning in the 9th grade through the collaboration between their English and Science classes. Along with the classroom STEM and PBL curriculums, we offer multiple field experiences that include on campus and off campus (single day and multi day field trips) experiences that are not offered at the other high schools.
Beyond the specific STEM experiences intertwined into our everyday learning here at LMHS, the smaller school, family atmosphere with a "whole student" focus supporting students' mental, physical and academic health have been the primary positive influences that have led to our schools' overall, district leading success over the past several years.
Louisburg Magnet High School began the process of transitioning to a STEM magnet school in the 2023-24 school year. As a result all 9th graders took STEM "Academy" specific courses their 9th grade year. As we move into our second year as a STEM Magnet School for the 2024-25 school year, we will be offering STEM Academy specific courses for 9th-12th grades.
The STEM Academy specific core courses that are taken together by all STEM Academy students in that grade. These courses are taken along with the student's personal plan of study.
