The LMHS Performing Arts Department is growing! In addition to the fantastic instrumental performing arts program with Band and Guitar that we have had for years, we have now expanded our performing arts to include a full time Chorus Teacher offering more Vocal Music classes, as well as music and theater appreciation, and we are hoping to add Piano as well!

**New** General Arts Education Courses
Theater Appreciation
This will be a new course that will be offered at LMHS int he 2024-2025 school year. This course provides a study of the art, craft, and business of the theater. The course content is designed to increase the student's awareness of the performing arts and their impact on society.
AP MUSIC THEORY Prerequisite: Advanced Concert or Jazz Band, or Advanced Vocal Music
A student who wishes to take an Advanced Placement course in music theory must have completed a section of Advanced Honors Band, or have passed a music theory screening test with the band director. The course will cover much of the material that would be in the first level of music theory in college. Students enrolled in this course will take the College Board Advanced Placement test in the spring.
Instrumental Music Course Descriptions
BEGINNING BAND*
This is a beginning level band class designed for students that would be new to band or for a current band student who might be interested in learning a secondary instrument. This class will perform in 2 concerts during the semester. Equipment can be provided by the school.
CONCERT BAND (Prerequisite: any previous band instrument experience) Students can register for multiple sections of Concert Band in a school year.) This class is designed for any experienced band student. The class will perform a variety of styles of music written for concert band. The class will perform in at least 2 concerts during the semester. Equipment can be provided by the school.
GUITAR METHODS*
This class is open to all levels of experience. The students will learn melodic playing, chord playing, and improvisational techniques. Instruction will be both group and individual, with assessments being given based on talent level of each Individual. This class will perform in 2 concerts during the semester. (Students can register for multiple sections of Guitar Methods in a school year and level up to receive Honors credit..)
JAZZ ENSEMBLE (Prerequisite: any previous band instrument experience)
This class is designed for any experienced band student. In this class, the students will learn Jazz history, articulations used in performing Jazz, and improvisational skills used in Jazz. This class will perform in at least 2 concerts during the semester. Equipment can be provided by the school.
MARCHING BAND (FALL) (Prerequisite: any previous band instrument experience)
This class is open to all levels of experience. The marching band is a performance based class that revolves around Friday night football games. The band also performs in community events and in parades. The music that is performed includes Pop, Patriotic, and some concert band standards. Equipment can be provided for the students by the school.
PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE*
This class is open to all levels of experience. The students will learn percussion techniques on a range of percussion instruments and in settings that include drumline, mallets, and rhythm percussion. Instruction will be both group and individual, with assessments being given based on the talent level of each individual. This class will perform in 2 concerts during the semester. Equipment will be provided.(Students can register for multiple sections of Percussion Ensemble in a school year and level up to receive Honors credit.)

Beginning Piano*
This will hopefully be a new course being offered at LMHS in 2024-2025. In this hands-on introductory class, students learn beginning piano skills and fundamentals of music literacy, including basic notation, rhythms, time signatures, and intervals.
Vocal Music Music Course Descriptions
VOCAL MUSIC/CHORUS- Beginning
This course is designed to familiarize high school students with the many techniques of vocal production through the study of a variety of choral literature in an ensemble setting. Students are encouraged to develop their own musical ability. Various styles of choral music are studied and performed.
VOCAL MUSIC/CHORUS- Intermediate
This course provides a mixed performing ensemble featuring vocal music literature within popular genres and various other forms of vocal music. Students should be able to sight-read and have a general understanding of music theory and notation. Music of various styles, cultures, and historical periods are included in the repertoire of choral literature studied and performed. Course content is aligned to the Essential Standards curriculum for music at the intermediate level. Performance is an important component of this course and may include required evening and weekend concerts all of which are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.
