What is the FAFSA?
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a government form that students with a Social Security Number (SSN) may fill out to determine eligibility for federal and state financial aid.
Colleges and career schools use the FAFSA form to determine how much financial aid you're eligible to receive, which could include grants, scholarships, work-study funds, and loans.
You must apply for aid every year, but with the right information in hand, it's easy.
Why should I fill out the FAFSA?
It’s free.
It gives you access to the largest source of financial aid to pay for college or career school.
You might be eligible for federal grants, which you don’t have to pay back.
You could qualify for work study jobs on campus.
Some scholarships require that you complete the FAFSA.
The income threshold for qualifying changes and many different factors are taken into account when determining aid eligibility.
Community College Promise Programs (aka free tuition!) typically require you to complete the FAFSA, regardless of whether or not you are awarded federal aid.
When is the FAFSA available?
The FAFSA will be available starting on October 1, 2025 for the 2026-2027 school year. However, students and guardians are able to make their FSAID's right now! This must be completed before filling out the FAFSA.
Where can I make my FSA ID?
Students and guardians can make their FSAID's at this link. Student AND guardians MUST complete this and the FAFSA in order to qualify for federal financial aid. Be sure to use your personal email to create your account!

The best resource is going to be the help center on the FAFSA website.
Another great resource is a FAFSA workshop held by a university. Here is a link to Sinclair's FAFSA Workshop sign ups. This link also has Virtual FAFSA Help Appointments available!
FHS will also be hosting a FAFSA workshop on October 13th from 5:30-7:30pm in the PAC.
