An anticipation guide that is based on provocative statements helps students reflect on big ideas and take a stance on issues and values. These are ideal for generating class discussions and are used to spark interest in a text students are going to interact with (written text, film, audio, etc.).
Another type of Anticipation Guide requires students to read a text and find text-based evidence to support their response. They may be asked to copy the key information and the page/paragraph where they found it. This variation of an anticipation guide acts as more of a close reading guide.
The Teacher Toolkit website talk more about how to use anticipation guides. The site features two videos of anticipation guides used in Gr 7 Math and Middle School Science classrooms and includes editable templates. Two of the templates have been posted below. Click to open in a new window.
