P1 have enjoyed lots of STEM visits, activities and challenges this week. We learned that STEM is short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We discussed all the skills we're been developing through our STEM tasks, whilst also having lots of fun!
Lily's dad came to talk to us about Science.
We talked about different jobs that we might choose that use Science.
He showed us an experiment with a chemical reaction.
We visited the Innovation Station with Mrs Martin and explored lots of different STEM resources; coding on iPads, codapillars, beebots, marbles run, makedo cutting tools and kapla building blocks.
Mr Crawford is also a scientist.
He has been to a rainforest to find and research animals.
He took his camera and took lots of photographs that he showed us.
Then he gave us some magnifying glasses to explore some natural materials he had brought (shells and flowers). It was really interesting looking at them closely.
Mr Crawford had a special magnifying glass with a light that he showed us how to use.
Thank you to both of our STEM visitors!
We also had a STEM challenge booklet that we worked on throughout the week to plan and build a strong and stable house for the Three Little Pigs. We drew a couple of plan ideas before deciding on our final design. We used a range of materials to create our houses (magnetic tiles, junk, lego, k-nex, wooden building blocks) and then tested them out by pretending to be the Big Bad Wolf blowing it down. Sometimes we needed to readapt our ideas for make them stronger - we used our problem solving and resilience skills alongside many others!
This term our open afternoon was based on our learning context chosen by the pupils - sea creatures. We loved having our adults come to visit us and help us with our learning.
We visited the P2/3 playground to complete some numeracy challenges, writing number lines, counting while moving tasks and creating hopscotch games with chalk.
We enjoyed a trip to Eaglesham Library to listen to some stories about sea creatures and borrow some books. Thank you to June for having us!
We have been learning to organise information in different ways, such as using tally marks, pictograms and bar charts. For outdoor learning, we collected natural objects, counted them then drew tally marks to represent the number.
We had a very comfy day at school for World Sleep Day. We even had some calm time before we went out for playtime and rested our bodies while listening to some relaxing music.
Caught you reading!
In gymnastics we have been exploring different rolls. We worked on a log roll and a tuck roll. Tuck roll was quite tricky, we had to hold the shape with tension!
Then we tried forward rolls, practising tucking our chin to our chest.
Thanks to Rosie for being our class photographer!
We have been learning about sea creatures and have been exploring different art techniques to create artwork for sharks, whales and seahorses.
We explored line by drawing wavy lines for the waves.
We added different line details in between each wave to explore pattern.
We used water then paint for a watercolour effect.
Some of our paint was too thick so we went over our details again with the black pen.
We watched a draw-along video to learn how to use line and shape to draw a seahorse. We were really proud of our drawings!
On World Book Day we dressed up as our favourite book characters and wrote about our favourite book and why it is our favourite.
We also invited our P7 buddies to come read story books to us.
Things beginning with 't'
Learning about teen numbers.
We were making a maze with cubes for the Beebot to travel around.
Using digraphs to make words.
We have been learning about positional language. We used words such as left, right, forwards and backwards to give instructions to tell our partner where to go.
