"Take out the numbers to make word problems make sense"

Word problems are common place in mathematics classrooms, and yet they regularly confound pupils. We need a way to make word problems make sense! That’s where Numberless Word Problems can help. Simply put, a Numberless Word Problem is a word problem where all the numbers have been removed.

Research has shown that when pupils are presented with a word problem they often demonstrate a “compulsion to calculate.” What this means is that they ignore the context of the problem. Instead, they pluck out numbers and perform some kind of calculation with them.

To help you with key concepts in mathematics, the children at Ivy Chimneys have created these help videos.

What is a Slow Reveal Graph?

Slow Reveal Graph is an instructional routine that promotes sensemaking about data.  This highly engaging routine uses scaffolded visuals and discourse to help students (in Early to Second Level and beyond) make sense of data. As more and more of the graph is revealed, pupils refine their interpretation and construct meaning, often in surprising ways. This routine increases access for students without sacrificing rigor or engagement.
