Medical Information and Health Care Needs

Parents should always inform the school of any medical conditions which may affect their child’s schooling or if their child needs regular medical treatment. Where a child requires medication during the school day, please ensure that you contact the school office and complete the relevant form.

Please note that medication cannot be administered without this for being completed.

Reducing the Risk of Transmission of Infection

Children who have an infectious disease should not attend school. They should only return after the risk of spreading infection to others has passed. It should be noted that certain infections, if caught by a pregnant member of staff or parent, can pose a danger to her unborn baby. You are asked to notify the school if your child has one of the following infections:-

·         German Measles (Rubella)

·         Chickenpox

·         Slapped Cheek (Parvovirus)

·         Measles

·         Shingles

Illness at school

On occasions, it may be necessary for a child to be taken home due to ill health, etc. In all cases, the school makes every effort to contact a parent in the first instance. If a parent is not available, the school will make contact with the child’s emergency contact for the necessary arrangements to be made. It is essential, therefore, that the school has up to date emergency contact who can be reached by telephone should a child need to be taken home unexpectedly. Under no circumstances will a child be sent home/allowed to leave the school unaccompanied.

Minor Accidents

Minor accidents are treated by first aid trained staff. In the event that a child has a head bump, we will notify you as a precaution.

Serious Accidents

Our first aid staff will be on hand in the event of a serious accident. It may be necessary for us to call the emergency services. Parents will be contacted immediately. It is extremely important that we have up-to-date emergency contact details for such an incident.

Routine Medical Examinations

Routine medical examinations are held from time to time throughout the child’s school life. P1 children will have their height and weight recorded, dental and sight checks as well as a health visit from the NHS. P7 pupils will receive a health interview, dental health and sight examinations. Parents are asked to inform the school, in writing, if there are any special medical requirements for their child.
