The development of the 2025–2026 Extended Learning Handbook provides campus administrators with a clear, districtwide framework to ensure high-quality, consistent implementation of extended learning opportunities across EPISD. The handbook establishes aligned expectations, procedures, and resources that guide campuses in delivering targeted instruction to support students who require additional time and support for mastery of essential skills.
Administrators will find explicit guidance on how to plan and monitor Intersession and Summer School programming, including student identification processes, recommended instructional structures, and the integration of research-based practices that address learning gaps. The handbook also outlines essential operational components—such as staffing guidelines, required assessment windows, lesson cycle expectations, HB 1416 requirements, and district-aligned instructional resources—ensuring that each campus has the tools necessary to design and implement effective learning experiences.
By standardizing systems and clarifying roles and responsibilities, the handbook supports administrators in executing programs with fidelity, maximizing instructional time, and ensuring that instruction is intentional, data-driven, and aligned to student needs. This comprehensive guide empowers campus leaders to confidently plan, communicate, and oversee Intersession and Summer School to accelerate academic growth for the students who need it most.

The EPISD Intersession is a districtwide initiative designed to provide targeted, high-quality learning experiences for students in grades K–12. During this three-day instructional period, campuses offer accelerated and supplemental instruction that reinforces essential skills in Reading, Mathematics, and Technology Enrichment and—at the high school level—course recovery and EOC preparation. The purpose of intersession is to support mastery of grade-level content by identifying learning gaps early in the school year and providing additional support aligned to student data.
Student participation is by invitation to ensure that those with the greatest academic need receive priority access. Eligibility is determined using multiple measures, including STAAR/EOC performance and BOY MAP Growth data, with a specific focus on students performing below the 29th percentile or requiring additional accelerated instruction hours. Campuses work closely with families to distribute invitations, collect signed permission slips by the deadline, and confirm attendance to support transportation, scheduling, and staffing needs.
The success of the Intersession Program reflects a coordinated effort across departments, campus leadership, and instructional staff. The Teaching & Learning Department provides professional development, curricular resources, coaching support, and guidance to ensure teachers are fully prepared. Child Nutrition, Transportation, and Health Services departments contribute to daily operations by providing meals, bus routes, and nursing coverage to support safety and accessibility for all students. Together, these systems ensure that Intersession strengthens academic achievement, promotes equity, and demonstrates EPISD’s commitment to extended learning opportunities for every student.
