Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory was made by SNK and was brought to the arcades on March 27, 1995, while Real Bout Fatal Fury was brought to the arcades the same year on December 21, 1995. Both were received very well for SNK games. Fatal Fury 3 changed up the gameplay from Fatal Fury and Fatal Fury 2, as instead of having the two-lane system, SNK changed it to be a three lane system, which sounds more difficult but it isn’t. It’s allows players to dodge out of the way of an attack by going into the other lanes and then counter attacking, which flows so much more better than jumping between two lanes. They also added desperation moves, a powerful move that you can only use if you're low health. If it lands, a good chunk of your opponent's health is taken away but, if you miss, it leaves you wide open. Real Bout Fatal Fury also uses this same fighting game system as well, so overall, they're both more fun than Fatal Fury and Fatal Fury 2.
The Jin Scrolls are artifacts that are said to only be obtained by the strongest fighter. These three scrolls were recorded during Qin Shi Huang’s reign during the B.C. era. Their secrets remain unknown, but it is said that these scrolls can only be collected during a time when martial artists repeated the art of combat from times of old. The scrolls were scattered across the world and they waited for the mightiest warrior to collect them.
Ryuji Yamazaki was orphaned at a young age in the streets of Okinawa. His life was miserable and boring with American Troops constantly patrolling the town. Ryuji soon caught a glimpse of a nicely dressed Yakuza boss named Sorimachi. Wanting to be like the man he saw, Ryuji left his town and joined the crime syndicate. Eventually, he ended up working under Sorimachi, the man he admired like a father, and, with this, Ryuji found happiness in his life. Unfortunately, like every gang, nothing ever goes right and, on a business trip to Osaka with his boss, they were ambushed by a rival gang. From here, Ryuji had to witness his surrogate father being tortured and killed. The shock of this death gave birth to Ryuji’s insane alter ego. After this, Ryuji barely remembers his past and fled from Japan to Hong Kong where he continues to be a gang member within Kowloon Walled City as his base of operations. He is usually at odds with a cop named Hon-Fu, which is very good for Ryuji since Hon-Fu is very bad at his job. Ryuji has psychopathic tendencies with a love for materialistic articles and money. He has two distinct personas, both malicious. Most of the time he is a calm and calculating gangster, while sometimes he turns into a hysterical, lunatic killer who likes to bash, smash, cut, and kill everyone and anyone whom he confronts as this cruel alternate persona. This alter ego was gained when he witnessed his surrogate father being murdered in front of him. Ryuji doesn’t use any fighting style, as he instead chooses to rely on his instinct to fight in addition to his power of having stretchy arms like Mr. Fantastic from the Fantastic 4.
The Jin brothers are next, with Jin Chonrei being the older twin brother of Jin Chonshu, and, when they were six, they lost their parents to an epidemic around their home. Before their father died, he spoke of Qin Wang Long, their family’s ancient ancestor. Wang Long was a celebrated general of the great Qin Shi Huang and was said to have single-handedly killed thousands of soldiers. Their father convinced them that they had the same blood of this warrior and soon after he passed away. The Jin brothers were left to fend for themselves and they supported themselves while trying to live up to their family name. As they grew older, they began to detest other people. When they were fourteen, they were attacked by some bullies that left them half-dead, which is when two spirits of their 2200-year-old ancestors possessed their bodies. Chonshu was possessed by Qin Hai Long and Chonrei was possessed by Qin Kong Long. Now they seek to gather the scrolls which will resurrect them in immortal bodies and allow them to conquer the world. Jin Chonshu is a very stubborn person. He doesn’t know when to lose and has a strong desire for revenge. He’s also very sarcastic and taunts his opponents during their fight. Jin Chonrei focuses himself on his little brother and wants to protect him at all costs. He is more brutal-minded and direct compared to Chonshu and, like his little brother, he also tends to taunt his opponents. He is very confident in his abilities and has no problem showing it off. Both Jin Brothers use a fighting style called Teiou Ken, which consists of moves most likely inspired by Kung Fu.
Mary Ryan, or Blue Mary, lost both her former lover Butch and her father, who were both colleagues working for the secret service. While on a mission protecting the president, they were both shot and killed by terrorists. Devastated by the loss, she never smiled again after the incident. The leather jacket she wears is a keepsake given to her as a gift from Butch. Before Butch’s passing, he taught Blue Mary how to fight and, with these skills, she became a freelance secret agent. Blue Mary is friendly towards everyone but she knows that her job must come first before anything else. Blue Mary’s fighting style is combat sambo, which originated in the Soviet Union. This martial art uses striking and grappling techniques and is particularly well-known for its flying joint locks, which she makes use of.
For our returning heroes, Terry is a cool guy who gets along with everyone except Geese and the newcomer Ryuji, Andy is a serious guy until you talk about his height, and Joe isn’t important to the plot at all.
The last Terry saw of Geese Howard was him kicking Geese off of his tower. That should have been Geese’s doom but, since he had one of the three scrolls in his possession, he used it to speed up his recovery and was able to survive. After laying low for awhile, he found out that there were more scrolls to be found and that they could grant him immortality. He reveals himself to be alive to the public and announces the new King Of Fighters (KOF) tournament; this new tournament will take place only in South Town. Soon, a rumor starts going around South Town about the scrolls being there. This rumor was started by Geese to get the rest of the scrolls in South Town. Soon, this rumor hits our heroes: Terry, Andy, and Joe. They all know that Geese most likely made up this rumor and they know he is up to no good, so Joe asks Hwa Jai to investigate with him. Terry and Andy go in alone. The Jin Brothers also heard of this rumor and hired a man named Ryuji Yamazaki to collect the scrolls for them. Our Heroes will end up battling other fighters like Bob Wilson, a young Brazilian Capoeira fighter, Franco Bash, a former super heavy kickboxing champ, Sokaku Mochizuki, head of a temple and heir of a clan of Buddhist monks, and Hon-Fu, A detective who is on a case concerning the mass illegal drug trade. During this tournament, Andy would suffer a gut wound and have to leave the tournament, leaving only Terry to get stuff done since Joe stopped investigating and started making googly eyes at Billy Kane’s sister. During the tournament, Terry would end up having to fight against Blue Mary, who is also investigating the scrolls, and, after a brutal fighting session, they become close friends. Afterwards, Terry had to fight Geese Howard at the top of his tower once again, with the battle being so heated this time that Geese’s tower ended up catching on fire. Geese ended up fleeing mid battle and left Terry to burn away in his Tower with nowhere to go. It seemed like the end for Terry but, as luck would have it, Cheng came to save him on a helicopter. Once getting down to the ground, Hon-Fu found Ryuji and, knowing his past, Hon-Fu would battle Ryuji and lose. Terry quickly caught up to Ryuji just in time to see Hon-Fu beaten. Terry and Ryuji would end up fighting with Terry winning and Ryuji would spill the beans on who hired him: the Jin Brothers. So, Terry would go to their shrine to see they already have two scrolls and just need one more until they reach their goal. Terry would fight Jin Chonshu, as he was the only one there at that time. Terry had a difficult time with Chonshu, but ended up beating him just in time for Chonshu’s overprotective brother Jin Chonrei to walk in and see just what happened to his little brother. The enraged Chonrei attacked Terry at blinding speeds. Terry somehow kept up with the Chonrei and soon beat him as well, but, with this deadly encounter with the Jin Brothers, Terry failed to notice that in the heat of the battle Geese was able to take the two other scrolls. With that, Geese had all the scrolls, but instead of using them, Geese instead told Billy to destroy the scrolls, since knowing that collecting all of the scrolls meant that he’s the strongest warrior is enough for him.
Geese wanted to settle his battle with Terry Bogard, so he made another KOF tournament and, obviously, Terry joined this tournament and got to fight Geese. Terry goes up to the top of Geese Tower, just like in their first battle, and, once again for the third time, Terry and Geese battle. During this battle, Terry and Geese would clash with each others most devastating move: Terry’s Power Geyser and Geese’s Raging Storm. Terry beat Geese in the clash, which would knock Geese off of his Tower, but, this time, Terry grabbed Geese’s hand and tried to pull him back up on the tower. However, with Geese having nothing left, he swipes Terry’s hand away and falls to his death, laughing all the way down.
A year after this event, Terry encounters a 8 year-old kid who angrily charges at him and, after their little scuffle, this boy tells Terry his name is Rock Howard. Terry, wanting to end the fight between Bogards and Howards, says that he wishes to get along with him. Rather than hate his father’s enemy, Rock felt a complicated mix of loneliness and joy knowing his father was dead. During Rock’s past, he grew up in a modest life with his mother Marie in a small apartment. He often wondered about someday meeting his father, which he was excited for. When Rock was seven, his mother contracted a mysterious disease and he tried his best to nurse her back to health. However, his mothers illness worsened and, with nothing left to do, Rock went to Geese's tower to and met his father for the first time in his life. Rock pleaded with Geese to give his mom medical aid and that his mother wanted to see him again, but all Geese did was send Rock away with nothing, ignoring his plea. Rock’s mom ended up dying that same night. Ever since then, Rock had a grudge against his father. Rock, with nothing to lose, decides to go with Terry, who quietly accepts Rock, and they start traveling together.
These games are actually super fun. The changes made to the gameplay made it stand out in a much better way than its predecessors. I fully recommend playing these games if you're a fan of fighting games. I also like the story in these games as well. I find the new characters to be much better and far more interesting than the one’s introduced in the last game. There are some things about the story that I don’t like and it has to do with Joe and Andy. They get nothing to do with the story; they never help Terry with his adventure; they're just there. However, this is it for Terry’s story. I think it’s good enough and I can totally see his story being adopted into a TV show or something of the sort. In short, this is a fun game with an interesting story and charismatic characters.
