Serena Williams played tennis where she broke the gender barrier. She won over 94.8 million in prize money over the course of her career. She won 73 career titles, she was also a 4-time Olympic gold medallist.
Serena and Jackie both had support from their family. In Promises to Keep, by Sharon Robinson, Rachel, Jackie's wife is quoted as saying, "During Jack's baseball career I (Rachel) attended every home game." This explains that Jackie had support from his wife. Serena Williams also had support from her family. Essentiallysports.com says, "Richard Williams (Serena's dad) took Serena to public courts in Compton to play tennis at the young age of five." This explains that Serena's dad supported her by teaching her at a young age. Jackie and Serena both had to face racist slurs. Promises to Keep page 34 says, ''Royals learned that there had been letters and calls threatening violence and a boycott if my father appeared on the field." This explains that Jackie faced racism and threats. Serena also faced racism in her career. ABCnewscom reports, ''Richard Williams said that his family was booed and taunted by a racist crowd." This explains Serena was often faced with racist comments and actions from people.
Jackie and Serena both exceeded in different sports. Jackie was a talented athlete who excelled in many different sports. While in college he played football, and baseball and participated in track and field. In Promises to Keep by Sharon Robinson, on page 18 it says, "The Pasadena Elks gave dad a gold football and named him the most valuable player." This explains that Jackie was good at football. Serena Williams excelled in tennis. Quera.com says that "Serena Williams is in the top 1% of tennis players among all men." This explains Serena Williams is a talented tennis player. Jackie Robinson and Serena Williams faced different challenges. Serena Williams was criticized because of the outfits she wore on the court. According to nytimes.com, “In the hands of Serena Williams [fashion], has become a political tool: an unabashed statement of female empowerment and independence not just for herself, but for all.” This explains that Serena Williams was not only looked at for her talent but also her fashion choices, but she decided to not let that stop her. Jackie Robinson was discriminated against because of the color of his skin. Promises to Keep, on page 34 tells us, "During one game, a Syracuse player tossed a black cat toward him yelling, 'Hey Jackie, there's your cousin clowning on the field.". This explains that Jackie was often faced with hateful comments simply because of the color of his skin.
