During his career as a professional soccer player, Pele won three FIFA world cups. He was the youngest player to win a World Cup. Pele was a top scorer for Brazil, making 77 goals in 92 games.
Pele and Jackie Robinson both broke color barriers in their sports. Jackie Robinson broke the baseball color barrier in Major League Baseball. According to the Library of Congress, "Robinson officially broke the major league color line when he put on a Dodgers uniform, number 42, in April 1947." This explains that by becoming the 1st African American to play Major League baseball he broke the color barrier. When Pele came to America he was faced with racism and color barriers. According to the Smithsonian website, "Pelé left Brazil and joined the New York Cosmos in 1974. Although soccer was the most popular sport in the world, it was barely acknowledged in the United States." This explains that even though Pele was an international superstar he still met adversity in the United States.
Pele and Jackie Robinson were both very good athletes in their respective sports. Jackie was a talented baseball player. In Promises to Keep, by Sharon Robinson, page 43 says, " By the end of Dad's (Jackie Robinson's) first official year in the majors, his record spoke for itself. My father led the league in stolen bases and in sacrifice bunts and was second in runs scored. He played 151 of the 154 games that first season, all at first base, and brought a new aggressive style to the game. The Sporting News and the Baseball Writers' Association named Dad Outstanding Rookie of the Year in honor of his hitting, running, defensive play, and value to his team." This tells us that Jackie was a very skilled baseball player. Pele, on the other hand, excelled on the soccer field. According to Britanica.com, "Pelé's electrifying play and penchant for scoring spectacular goals made him a star around the world. " This explains how talented Peles was.
