Exploring Engineering
Description:
Imagine you are a career counselor holding a job fair for students from the Calgary Board of Education who are interested in Engineering. Your job is to create an informative and creative slideshow to present to students describing what engineering is and the different disciplines contained within each major type of engineering. In addition, you will describe one job in the field of engineering that you are most interested in to get other students excited about this field of science! At the end of this assignment we will hold a mini job fair in the engineering labs so your classmates can learn about the job you researched, and vice-versa. You may work in a group of 1-3.
Name your presentation "0.4 Exploring Engineering" and make sure a copy is in each group member's ePortfolio.
Task 1
Each group must complete a Google slide/Prezi for the 5 major branches of engineering, as well as 3 sub-disciplines for each:
Civil
Mechanical
Electrical
Chemical
Interdisciplinary
For example, civil engineering can be further subdivided into transportation engineering, structural engineering, geomatics engineering, environmental engineering, or soil engineering.
What to include:
For each branch:
i) A title slide showing a diagram of the branch divided into its corresponding sub-disciplines
ii) An overall description of the design aspect involved, what the engineers do, and what types of projects are involved.
For 3 sub-disciplines in EACH major discipline: A more detailed description of the specialized area of science involved, and give examples of specific projects.
Task 2
Each student needs to choose a specific post secondary pathway in an engineering or engineering-adjacent career.
These programs should be within southern Alberta.
For that pathway you need to state the following:
Name of the school and program.
Entry requirements for that particular program.
A project that an engineer/technologist in that area might work on.
What work the engineer/technologist does on a daily/monthly basis.
Their annual salary range.
This should be done as part of your google slide/doc presentation. Each student needs to research a program/career, therefore if you are in a group of 3 you need to research 3 different programs/careers.
Task 3
Each student in the group needs to look at the entrance requirements of an engineering or engineering adjacent program outside of Calgary. This means that a group of three should have looked into UCalgary, MRU, and SAIT (in part 2) as well as three other institutions.(in part 3)
These programs have the same requirements as task 2 except they are outside of southern Alberta:
Name of the school and program.
Entry requirements for that particular program.
A project that an engineer/technologist in that area might work on.
What work the engineer/technologist does on a daily/monthly basis.
Their annual salary range.
Add a slide (or slides) showing the reasons and ways to go to these institutions.

**When you read resources realize that they often present things like annual salary in American dollars (USD) and often those numbers are outdated. Look for recent and Canadian articles if possible.
